Israeli police have revealed suspicions that a four-year-old girl had been murdered and dumped in a river by her grandfather and her mother, who were in a romantic relationship.
Police on Tuesday removed a gag order over the details of the gruesome case which they had described as "one of the most shocking in the country's history."
The grandfather, identified as Ronny Ron, 45, lived in the coastal town of Natanya just north of Tel Aviv together with 23-year-old Marie Pisam, a French woman who had immigrated to Israel together with Ron's son Benjamin, with whom she had a daughter named Rose.
Benjamin divorced Marie some three years ago after he found out his wife was having an affair with his father, and today Ron and Pisam have two children together, police said.
Leading police investigator Ilan Ben Shalom told reporters that Ron had admitted to beating Rose to death before stuffing her body into a suitcase and throwing it into the Yarkon river in Tel Aviv three months ago.
"Ronny and Marie are involved in the murder and disappearence of Rose," Ben Shalom said at the press conference.
Although he had reconstructed the murder, Ron later retracted his testimony, Ben Shalom said. Police have yet to locate the body.
"We have conducted an extensive search in different places, including the Yarkon river where for several days we applied different means to locate the body," he said.
Police suspect that the murder occurred in May, but the girl's disappearance was only brought to their attention some two weeks ago when her great-grandmother contacted welfare authorities.

I know, I just know, that religious fundamentalists (Jewish, Christian, Muslim, or all of the above, take your pick) will blame a convenient scapegoat (Jews, Christians, Muslims, homosexuals, etc.) for the murder.
Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.
They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

I really doubt anyone will start an immediate "blame campaign" of that kind.
OTOH, it's quite possible that after a while, some asshole (most likely affiliated with Shas) will hold this up as an example of the decadence of Israeli society (or of unkosher mezuzot or something)
A parent or grandparent murdering their progeny is really just an expression of selfish psychopathy or some other kind of brain disorder at the end of the day, with the same thing applying to so-called 'Honor Killings' (only they're encouraged by mentally deficient 'traditions').

A French court awarded them sutody - from what I understand (from TV news report), the biological father was beating on her (And it looks like he didn't make any effort whatsoever to stay in touch with the girl).
Marie regained custody of Rose in December 2007, after the girl had been hospitalized in France and Marie had suspected her daughter had been abused. The girl joined her family in Israel.

Yes, but because it took place in Israel, a connection, can, must, and will be made to some sort of religious fucktardery. It is absolutely imperative and any ordinary comment about "damn, that's fucked up" will not be sufficient.

More often than not children get murdered because the father responsible is a raging dick since day one anyway and the primary reason why he estranged his wife in the first place, with his clued up wife needing to be horribly punished for finding out what an evil fucker he really is. But in this case it is a double tragedy, with the sociopathic asshole traits being passed directly from father to son, with the poor girl not standing a chance.

Just based on what's in the news so far, it seems the family was even more fucked up than that.
The great-grandfather walked out on his wife and four children. Said wife (who was the one who finally reported Rose as missing) had to support the children alone and apparently beat them (When one of the daughters left, she totally cut off contact with her*). The grandfather, in turn, apparently had some fucked-up relationship with his son (Rose's father) - they were completely estranged until the son came back from France with his wife and daughter. The rest has been discussed above.
BTW, as far as Jewish fundies are concerned - I saw in the morning paper that this entire affair has gone almost unmentioned in the Ultra-Orthodox press. Apparently, they're treating it gingerly because of the (semi-)incest and "father"-daughter murder angles - and since it's been concluded that she's dead, they say there's no reason to stress it more (the report pointed out that in a previous missing girl case - were eventually it turned out the father had murdered her - the haredi papers did cover it, at least while the search was ongoing)
*In an unrelated case, that daughter was murdered along with her (second) husband while on their honeymoon about a month ago

Given the comments from half the folks in this thread, I find this statement to be hilariously ironic.
People, this is an ordinary, run-of-the-mill(albeit horrific) murder. We DO have those, y'know. Not everything is about religion.
