UPDATE (see below for SC GOP Statement)

On a plane from Denver to Charlotte following the Democrats' convention, I found myself seated behind former National Chairman of the Democratic National Committee Don Fowler and Congressman John Spratt of South Carolina. Their conversation was interesting to say the least.

For example, they made fun of Sarah Palin for several minutes, Fowler calling her "Dan Quayle" on steroids and Spratt creatively describing her as "just terrible." They both agreed that, "Other than the simple fact that she's a female," she has nothing to offer.

Then there was this gem of a moment from Fowler:

So you see, it's funny. That New Orleans will get a hurricane. That's funny because it is due to hit when President Bush is scheduled to speak. Isn't that cool? Fowler isn't the only one who thinks so, just ask Michael Moore.

We all know Democrats used and use Katrina as a political football as callously as possible. Here's a candid moment showing some can hardly wait for another one.

All Class.

BREAKING: Statement from SCGOP Chairman Katon Dawson

"The outrageous behavior of two of the Obama campaign's highest profile supporters in the south is despicable, a cynical politization of life and death. I call on Barack Obama to immediately denounce Fowler and Spratt and demand sincere apologies from these members of the Democratic leadership."
Eh well why not? You just know the Conservatards are going to call it God's wraith on gays, liberals... pardon me lieberals ect.

At least when we do it it's a touch of black humor and not meant to be taken seriously whereas the conservatards mean it literally

How do we know that's even true?

I mean, hurricanes shouldn't be played for politics either way without valid reason (mismanagement? okay. electoral probability talk? yeah, why not. political point counting? probably on the line, in my opinion).

It's just some guy. Is this confirmed? Regardless, who cares? I'm not sure why Obama has to denounce some guy because he's a Jackass with a -D on his name.

This is one line I'm really sick of hearing. I've had to hear it for the last 3 years. "It's not Bush's fault the hurricane hit New Orleans!" No but it's his fault the response was so incompetent. "Why are you attacking him? Other people screwed up too!" Because he's at the top. "You're just using this as an excuse to attack him. We have to support him, he needs our support!"

Repeat ad nauseum.

Hi, pot? Yeah, this is kettle. You're black.
A Christian fundamentalist group is praying for a deluge to drown out Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in two weeks' time.

Focus on the Family is asking for "abundant, torrential" downpours to flood Denver and silence Senator Obama when he accepts the Democratic Party's presidential nomination on August 28.

"Would it be wrong to ask people to pray for rain of Biblical proportins," asks an umbrella wielding Stuard Shepard in a video put out by the ultra conservative evangelical group. He asks for the rain to start "two minutes before the acceptance speech begins."

Tickets to Mr Obama's speech, in a vast Denver stadium that seats 75,000 people, have all been snapped up.

On the video, Mr Shepard says "I'm still pro-life, and I'm still in favour of marriage as being between one man and one woman." Apparently referring to the Republican presidential candidate John McCain, he adds, "I would like the next president who will select justices for the next Supreme Court to agree."

Focus for the Family pulled its video clip 24 hours after it was posted, but it can still be seen on the internet. In a statement Mr Shepard said that the video was intended to be "mildly humorous."

The organisation has attacked Mr Obama in the past. Its leader, James Dobson, recently accused the Illinois senator of distorting the Bible's message.

"He is dragging biblical understanding through the gutter," he said.

Fowler Video

I wouldn't be surprised if Fowler was being serious (sometimes a smile and a laugh can be from just happy), although he says he was merely joking when he apologized for the remark sometime yesterday. Do you find it funny in any way?

And CorSec, yes, that guy and his group are asinine no doubt, but there are a couple of significant differences here. The former head of the DNC and a sitting Representative versus some guy and his group which I've never heard of before and likely won't again. And praying for a rain-out of a speech versus giggling that a hurricane is likely going to cause billions of damage in a still-recovering city because it may give their candidate a couple of point in the polls?

Are you really using this as a "but but conservatives do it too!" defense?

Not particularly funny, but appropriate. Let's be honest here; the hurricane has political implications. It's a reminder back to 2005, which means that it casts shadows on Republican governance today. It's also probably did help Democrats, but in a different way than what Fowler said; it sucked up a lot of the oxygen in the media away from McCain's VP pick.

It's not an equivalency, but this is hardly "some guy and his group". This is Focus on the Family, which is James Dobson's outfit and one of the largest conservative evangelical voices in the country.

I agree that the situation has implications reminding people of Katrina and that attention will shift away from the election/RNC and possibly help the Democrats simply by being. I don't agree that it was an appropriate or funny remark in any way.

Well, it's true that I hadn't heard of them before or at least paid attention to. But you're right that this isn't a small one-time shot group (I wikied them). You learn something new every day.

My main problem was the "other group does it too" excuse.

ONLY funny as in every time a disaster happens the Conservatives scream it's God punishing: Liberals, gays, pagans, lesbians, Muslims, [insert undesirable here].

Now there getting slapped down.

The loss of life, property and all the innocents hurt however I do not in the least find amusing.

Maybe funny isn't even the word for how I feel. I want to laugh at the irony, but the thought of innocents suffering kills my jockularity over this.

As it does for me.

Statements like those of Falwell, Moore, Roberson, Phleps, Fowler, ect should be castigated roundly. And while I never thought for a moment that you agreed with Fowler, it just seemed to me like you were excusing it by believing he was being sarcastic referring to the religious right. I believed he was serious in his statement.

I was going to follow the last with the comment "not all fundamentalists belong to the Republican Party" but I don't want to appear to label Fowler as such as I don't know anything about his religious views.

But that brings me to a big difference between Fowler and the others not yet pointed out, which is that Falwell and his ilk intentionally issue this nonsense publicly whereas Fowler was surreptitiously taped during a private conversation. It doesn't excuse the sentiment and still aggravates me, but it doesn't bring it to the level of vileness that the others do.
