Obama Prime Time Special Talkback

Post by FireNexus »

I figure this deserves its own thread. 10 minutes until the start.
I had a Bill Maher quote here. But fuck him for his white privelegy "joke".

Very classy thus far. Obama's narration reminds me almost of Morgan Freeman - surely a good association for many undecideds.

Really he's being very positive, which is good. This man could certainly talk me into gay sex without a doubt.

A bit cliche, I think, especially the back ground music.

Nothing we haven't heard before, but it's a way to lay out all his arguments clearly and uninterrupted, and cut past the bull and the distractions of a debate, or the sound bites and media spin of a campaign speech. Hopefully he'll be able to clear up certain misconceptions about his values and policies that have been spread in recent weeks.

So what did you all think?

I thought it was brilliant. I'm more confident in his chances than ever before.

It worked very well because it wasn't him talking at us for half an hour. It was a documentary about America, and why Obama would be best to lead it. It was perfectly constructed.

It did what it needed to, which was to sum up the general tone of Obama's values, his campaign, and his future Presidency. A way to get the last word in after the flood of GOP distractions. If what the "talking heads" on CNN have been saying is right, the last week is supposed to be about summing up the campaign and returning to the positive message. Which this add did adequately. Well played, Obama.

Every single second of that special was polished to an extreme. Brilliantly done. The fact that Obama was able to actually buy out that much airtime is a testament to his massive fundraising power.

Before this began, MNSBC was airing a clip of McCain bashing Obama for delaying the baseball game. It honestly sounded like he was jealous as hell. This is going to be the focus of the campaign for the rest of the week, and will dominate the news cycle for the next several days. Each day closer to the election is a day less for McCain to pull a miracle out of his ass. The only thing worse for McCain than not getting a miracle is getting a miracle when no one is paying attention. Barring a major scandal, Obama's got this.

I was really impressed. It was very informative about his life and things I had no idea about as well as laying out his policies in a general manner. You know McCain is shaking in his fucking boots right now.

I agree, I thought it was very well done.

Of course I voted for him on Monday so its kind of a mute point now.

Even leaving aside that this was just a fantastically produced narrative the ad did one more important thing: It captured the last news cycle before the election. While I'm sure anyone who isn't a political junkie is probably sick to death of the US elections by this point we are at the home stretch. There is just one last news cycle to change everyone's mind and it ends with the Sunday talk shows this weekend. Obama just garunteed that he will be THE story, and the positive story, on the lead of every program for the next two days which leaves only Saturday as a possible stumbling block. If his campaign executes (as I expect it will) by making follow on announcements abotu fundraising, volunteer numbers, and donor numbers then he wins the weekend and there is literally no way to shit the election on Monday. The Sunday papers take the lead, the Sunday talk shows set the final narrative and the Monday morning papers summarize the Sunday talk shows. By time we get to Tuesday and the next set of news folks are already voting.

Really, nothing new, but it was a masterful peice of communication. Obama struck an interesting tone and message. The parallels struck between himself, and both the families pictured and just regular people, hit the 'familiarity' button Bush relied on, without the 'Dumb fool you'd have a beer with' idiocy.

You mean, of course, why did he not enrage every NIMBY and other anti-nuke proponant by adopting something that all records show he'll adopt, simply to satisfy the pet hopes of a few folks?

...Because...Obama...has to...appeal...to people...who...aren't...you...

...

Because nuclear energy in America is controversial and Obama would not want to have his Obama Special Time feature something that will not benefit him politically but might end up actually damaging him. Politically and campaign-wise, and popularity contest wise, nuclear energy is not so hot a topic. He's got other messages, better and more positive ones, to focus on.

...

One-Issue Voting is dumb. Did Obama rattle on about gun control? No he didn't, since while that would make some people happy, it would also piss off other folks. He's campaigning, not enacting major policy. He's not President yet.

Agreed. I know this is the way to sway American voters, but the rolling fields of grain and flags fucking everywhere were so over-the-top it almost looked like a parody ad.

It got better further in - he made a good point of highlighting real problems facing the middle class, not made-up bullshit like how gay marriage will destroy the country. It's just the saccharine package that I imagine turns off any non-American.

Crap, sorry about the '...' issue again.

The thing is, his opponent, McCain has mentioned nuclear energy again and again.

What is wrong with bringing nuclear issue up as well? If both candidates support nuclear energy, doesn't this tell people how important it is?

I mean I know that Obama has ties with nuclear power plant companies if I remember that he is pro-nuclear. However, why do you need to avoid the issue in a race where the other party mentioned nuclear energy again and again?

Because McCain's base contains few if any greens. Obama's base has a large proportion of green's and green-leaning people who are disproportionately against nuclear power because of 30 odd years of misinformation.

He's got a good lead. Now is not the time to piss off a chunk of your base and have them dashing off to vote for a third party.

Oh ok, got it.

Well I wish a massive nuclear technology education campaign will kick off soon, and educate all those greens.

The chernobyl incident is a massive PR diaster for people who support nuclear power.
