President Obama's Inaugural Address
I dunno about the rest of you, but I thought it was a pretty kickass speech. Right tone, right sentiments, hit all the necessary areas. I felt properly inspired to pull it together and work on fixing things.
I wonder how many people worldwide watched it. Anyone got the text?

I tried to watch the inauguration, but the streaming was jacked up (lots of stuttering and freezing).

Re: President Obama's Inaugural Address
Probably because more than a billion people were trying to watch it online. I did think it was funny that he started off with '44 men have taken this oath' when it was actually 43. Grover Cleaveland is remembered as the 22nd and 24th President, so even though Obama is #44, only 43 men have ever been President.
What I DID like was Obama and Roberts' trouble with the oath, made me sure he hadn't been rehearsing it over and over. I like a man to be just a bit nervous when he's getting sworn in.

I liked it. He's a great orator, but let us not forget that Blair was too. We shall test his mettle soon enough, and I'm really hoping bailouts for all isn't his sole gameplan.

We watched a streaming broadcast at my office just fine with no stuttering. Although the goof in the swearing in is almost guaranteed to make the networks a few times over.CaptainChewbacca wrote:Probably because more than a billion people were trying to watch it online. Just heard the Star Spangled Banner bit... did anyone else get a sense that Barack Obama specifically chose to herald American exceptionalism / basically say that the previous administration 'merely' took America off of that path? I ended up being reminded of, if I recall correctly, Darth Wong wondering why the U.S. Constitution was held so sacred...
*Remembers some Brit who said that decline was inevitable and that Obama should be preparing America for that instead of getting hopes up*
As for the little repeats... no matter how many times you rehearse it, it's at that moment that you are swearing the oath of the Presidency, and that I'm sure would get any president-about-to-be just a wee bit nervous. I don't blame him a bit.

I like how Obama bash the policies of the Bush administration in his speech. Although in comparision to JKF's speech and etc, I will not say Obama's speech is at the top.

Re: President Obama's Inaugural Address
Watched it live on TV with the sound set to English to cut out the translation and Obama's speech was perhaps the strongest one I've heard. It would have been too flowery for Finns, but it was, in my opinion, a good speech for Americans and fit the current state of the US very well.
It was also downright scathing in its characterization of many of the things that are the sacred cows of the lolbertarian and big money interests. I bet there are many of the old money aristocrats who were grinding their teeth at it. Didn't go too easy on the Bush administration either, because that section of the speech was a theme of return to America's founding values (setting aside the historical wrongs of that era, but nonetheless). I suspect many of the neocons feel like they just got slapped across the face.
If he is halfway as kickass as a president as he was during the speech, it will be a good thing indeed.

I watched it on BBC, but it was also broadcast live on three Flemish channels and every newspaper has a live stream. I doubt there's many people in Europe who won't have heard at least the highlights by this time tomorrow.
Terrific speech, too. Very to-the-point, and he even gave a shout-out to atheists! is that a first?

Aaand Charles Gibson just called him on the #44 bit. (Incidentally, I wonder what Bush said to Obama on the way to the Marine helicopter?)

'Cause every national leader of any country should start off by saying "well, everyone, we're fucked. Fuck y'all. We're all gonna die. Later." Seriously.Edward Yee wrote:Just heard the Star Spangled Banner bit... did anyone else get a sense that Barack Obama specifically chose to herald American exceptionalism / basically say that the previous administration 'merely' took America off of that path? The Constitution should not necessarily be held as "sacred", perhaps, but it does give an important standard to set by which a President can be measured. It outlines good ideals and we can tell just how far off the beaten path we are by comparing what a sitting President does in relation to the ideals stated in that document. How did we know, for example, exactly how bad things like the PATRIOT Act were? Because we could measure how far away they strayed from the Constitution. Sure, you can say "well, any idiot can tell it's bad" but even a professional cabinet maker needs a measuring tape before trying to make a cabinet fit into a confined space.
I think Obama did get a number of digs at the previous administration, excoriating the politics of deviseness and irresponsibility (words to that effect) that had brought our nation low. There's only one person he could be talking about, after all, since in th elast 8 years we went from peace and budget surplus to... this... and only one guy has been at the helm the hwhole time (well, technically, Cheney, but he's done too; all that's left to do with him is hammer in the stake and seal the box. We saw how sunlight weakened him and he had to be in the wheelchair...).
I'm just glad the grown-ups are back in charge.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!

I got the impression that Obama was expecting for Roberts to say a shorter segment of the oath than he actually did, so Obama started early. I know the same thing happened whenever the more obscure oaths were administrated to Scouts.CaptainChewbacca wrote:Regarding the flub: Was it that Obama messed up, or did Roberts say the wrong words and Obama was waiting for him to say the RIGHT words?
