Some of these cuts I could agree with, but I'm a little amazed at some of the things that got chopped. State and Local law enforcement got removed entirely, aren't they always in dire need of funds to keep officers? NASA gets the shaft again, no surprise there but annoying. The $2billion investment in broadband would have been fantastic and likely created a number of related jobs, so that one's a big pet peeve. Anyone else annoyed at specific items that went to the chopping block on this?(CNN) -- A coalition of Democrats and some Republicans reached a compromise that trimmed billions in spending from an earlier version of the Senate economic stimulus bill.
CNN obtained, from a Democratic leadership aide, a list of some programs that have been cut, either entirely or partially:

The distance learning program if it's the one I think it is pisses me off. I know a lot of people for whom distance learning is the only way to get a degree or GED and those kind of investments tend to come back in the form of taxing on the graduate that now has a better job.

Sorry, I didn't do the math. Does this mean the Senate's back down to the original ~$750 billion 'stimulus?'

Re: List of Official Cuts from the Stimulus
I'd like to see an item by item list of whats still being funded. It seems like lots of good things that I'm actually qualified to work on were cut.

The education/school construction are odd cuts, because those would actually create jobs. Actually, a lot of those would create jobs.

Re: List of Official Cuts from the Stimulus
I think my Mom theorized that the GOP is getting good stuff cut from the bill to make it fail, so they can then blame Obama. Of course, they could just be opposing any spending regardless of merit simply because its (non-military) spending.Jason L. Re: List of Official Cuts from the Stimulus
Yes, they would. If you removed the tax cuts which failed spectacularly when over a trillion of them were enacted in 2001's milder recession, and restored funding to this, there's even more good stuff to add.Jason L. This presumes a sane person.
The Republican view is the same they're institutes and think-tanks have been publically posting for a while. It Must Fail. The human cost, the economic cost, the national cost, all are unimportant. What is important is that if it passes and creates a solid benefit, it will banish the GOP in much the same way the New Deal did.

Which is why I fail to understand, how did those idiots maintain such a strong grip in US politics for so long. There are no concerned about the welfare of thier citizen, only their party.SirNitram wrote:Yes, they would. When you'd rather your country collapsed than you be proven wrong, its time to go. The problem is that a one party system is hardly ideal.
I've reached the conclusion that the US has no viable political future short of civil war or dictatorship if the GOP does not collapse. We need a third party.

Re: List of Official Cuts from the Stimulus
It's not nearly so dire as dictatorship - there's still the primary elections which determine what candidate gets to run as the party's candidate, and incumbents have lost primaries before. I imagine that after not too long, the Democratic Party would split and we'd have two parties again.

Re: List of Official Cuts from the Stimulus
Agreed, even that small list of cuts leaves hundreds of billions in spending un-accounted for. Have they provided a detailed breakdown of what this massive spending bill will actually do with these new cuts?Admiral Drason wrote:I'd like to see an item by item list of whats still being funded.
