Unbefuckinglievable!
Food writer's online guide to building an H-bomb...the 'evidence' that put this man in Guantanamo

By Jason Lewis
Last updated at 12:07 AM on 08th February 2009

A British ‘resident’ held at Guantanamo Bay was identified as a terrorist after confessing he had visited a ‘joke’ website on how to build a nuclear weapon, it was revealed last night.

Binyam Mohamed, a former UK asylum seeker, admitted to having read the ‘instructions’ after allegedly being beaten, hung up by his wrists for a week and having a gun held to his head in a Pakistani jail.

It was this confession that apparently convinced the CIA that they were holding a top
Al Qaeda terrorist.

But The Mail on Sunday can reveal that the offending article – called How To Build An H-Bomb – was first published in a US satirical magazine and later placed on a series of websites.

Written by Barbara Ehrenreich, the publication’s food editor, Rolling Stone journalist Peter Biskind and scientist Michio Kaku, it claims that a nuclear weapon can be made ‘using a bicycle pump’ and with liquid uranium ‘poured into a bucket and swung round’.

Despite its clear satirical bent, the story led the CIA to accuse 30-year-old Mohamed, a caretaker, of plotting a dirty bomb attack, before subjecting him to its ‘extraordinary rendition programme’.

During his eight-year imprisonment, Mohamed has allegedly been flown to secret torture centres in Pakistan, Morocco, an American-run jail known as the Dark Prison near Kabul in Afghanistan and, finally, to Guantanamo Bay.

The Foreign Secretary is refusing to release classified documents relating to Mohamed’s detention.

Last week, the High Court ruled that the 42 intelligence papers must remain secret.
However, the judges insisted they had no choice because the Government had informed them of a ‘threat’ by the US to withdraw all intelligence co-operation with Britain if the papers were published by the court.

Mr Miliband was then forced to defend the claim in the House of Commons, insisting that the US needed ‘confidence that its secrets are safe with us’.

However, details of what Mohamed told his interrogators, unearthed by this newspaper, are likely to cast further doubt on Mr Miliband’s stance.

We can reveal that the story which apparently led to Mohamed’s ordeal could not possibly have been used by a terrorist to build a nuclear weapon. The satirical article, published in Seven Days magazine, says its authors were given ‘three days to cook up a workable H-bomb. They did and we have decided to share their culinary secrets with you’.

It adds: ‘Not that Seven Days supports nuclear terrorism. We don’t. We would prefer to die from familiar poisons like low-level radiation, microwaves, DDT or food dyes, rather than unexpectedly, say as hostage to a Latvian nationalists brandishing a home-made bomb.’

The recipe is highly detailed and plainly ridiculous. The prospective bomb maker is instructed to transform uranium gas into liquid by ‘subjecting it to pressure’, adding: ‘You can use a bicycle pump for this.’

The instructions continue: ‘Then make a simple home centrifuge. Fill a standard-size bucket one-quarter full of liquid uranium hexafluoride.

‘Attach a 6ft rope to the bucket handle. Now swing the rope (and attached bucket) around your head as fast as possible. Keep this up for about 45 minutes.

‘Slow down gradually, and very gently put the bucket on the floor. The U-235 – a uranium isotope which can be used to cause an explosive chain reaction – will have risen to the top, where it can be skimmed off like cream. Repeat this step until you have the required 10lb of uranium.’

Last night, Mohamed’s lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith, confirmed that the article was central to claims that his client was planning a dirty bomb attack.

‘Unclassified evidence corroborates Binyam’s claims that he was threatened – at the time the White House was obsessed by the idea terrorists had access to nuclear materials,’ he added. ‘Binyam said that he told them about a website he had once seen on the internet called How To Build An H-Bomb. He said that this was a joke but they thought it might be serious.

‘I am speculating but I think this news was sent up the line to the White House, which is when the paranoia kicked in. They authorised the “enhanced interrogation techniques” against Binyam, including the rendition. This is how they made their
huge mistake, thinking he was a major terrorist as opposed to a London janitor.

‘It explains why they took a nobody and subjected him to the worst torture of any US prisoner in the past seven years.’
But wait! There's MORE! You also get your pecker slashed with a knife:
LONDON (AP) — The U.S. government has photographic evidence that a Guantanamo Bay inmate was tortured with a knife after being taken to Morocco by U.S. forces, a British human rights group said Tuesday.

Reprieve said their client, Binyam Mohamed, had his genitals slashed repeatedly with a doctor's scalpel while in custody in Morocco after he was flown there from Pakistan by American officials in 2002. It also said his U.S. captors later took pictures of the abuse to show authorities that his wounds were healing.
As it turns out, Binyam Mohamed is one of the clients who was just thrown under the bus by the Obama/Holder Justice Department.
Two weeks ago, I interviewed the ACLU's Ben Wizner, counsel to 5 individuals suing the subsidiary of Boeing (Jeppesen) which had arranged the Bush administration's rendition program, under which those 5 plaintiffs had been abducted, sent to other countries and brutally tortured. Today the Obama administration was required to file with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals its position in this case -- i.e., whether it would continue the Bush administration's abusive reliance on the "state secrets" privilege to prevent courts from ruling on such matters, or whether they would adhere to Obama's previous claims about his beliefs on "state secrets" by withdrawing that position and allowing these victims their day in court.

Yesterday, enthusiastic Obama supporter Andrew Sullivan wrote about this case: "Tomorrow in a federal court hearing in San Francisco, we'll find out if the Obama administration intends to keep the evidence as secret as the Bush administration did." As I wrote after interviewing Wizner two weeks ago: "This is the first real test of the authenticity of Obama's commitment to reverse the abuses of executive power over the last eight years." Today, the Obama administration failed that test -- resoundingly and disgracefully:

Obama Administration Maintains Bush Position on 'Extraordinary Rendition' Lawsuit

The Obama Administration today announced that it would keep the same position as the Bush Administration in the lawsuit Mohamed et al v Jeppesen Dataplan, Inc.

A source inside of the Ninth U.S. District Court tells ABC News that a representative of the Justice Department stood up to say that its position hasn't changed, that new administration stands behind arguments that previous administration made, with no ambiguity at all. The DOJ lawyer said the entire subject matter remains a state secret.

This is not going to please civil libertarians and human rights activists who had hoped the Obama administration would allow the lawsuit to proceed.
You can read the rest at Glenn Greenwald's site. Read a humor piece on the web, get your dick sliced, get locked up for going on eight years -and the US government will resort to every scheme possible to keep you there. And that now includes the Obama Administration.

god dammit. I can't believe that the Obama administration is trying to pull the same bullshit as the previous one.

Is it too much to hope for that they're just waiting until they finish sorting all the shit out to let this go foreward?

At least they're closing gitmo.....

You know, Elfdart, I have to admit that your continued aggressiveness against government abuses of power now that Obama is in office has led to an enormous increase in my respect for you. I had previously rated you as being exceptionally partisan; now I know that opinion was very, very wrong, and my salutation to you for it, too. Takes guts to not just get comfortable and fat and happy now that your enemy is gone, and to be willing to attack the nominal saviour of American democracy on top of it.

Turns out he has REAL principles, and not childish 'my team right your team wrong' nonsense.

That said I've heard everyone in Gitmo is an enemy combatant, so it's okay that they're held without trial. Elfdart must have his information wrong! :)

Well, that's the thing that separates the liberals from the Republicans. If the Republican party decides to allow and support homosexual marriages, and tried to massive public campaign to advocate their stance, a huge number of Republican supporters will do so because they are the Republican party, and not because it is morally right or anything.

Not so many as you think. And right now the GOP is suffering some significant political infighting as the moderates are vying for control against the conservatives. And the conservatives are winning. Which is good for the Democrats for the time being.

Do you have examples of this? I haven't actually become lucid of politics until relatively recently. It seems to me from the huge amounts of responses I have seen in regards to the issue that most Republicans would continue opposing something like gay marriage even more violently after the policy would be enacted rather than nod submissively.

The better example would be business- if the Republicans suddenly about faced on economic issues such as the stimulus, right-wing dittoheads would immediately reverse their opinions on things, and it would trickle down to the average man. Push button "Moral Values" issues of Abortion and Marriage Equality are unusual in that regard perhaps uniquely, so why Ray chose one of the only counterexamples of this to try to illustrate it is... well, I guess we just will never know.

Is anyone really surprised by this? Obama started reneging on his campaign claims (by his actions in the senate) before he even made it to office.

Obama had better fucking change his tune soon, or his crediblity will plummet and this huge black mark will be a tumour on his term.

And like it or not, the U.S. (well, preferably Bush the Lesser and his toadies) will eventually be bitchslapped by *huge* lawsuits. Delaying the inevitable will only make things worse, and surely Obama can see that.

Really, what the fuck, Obama? :wtf: :banghead:

Lawsuits are the last thing I'd be worried about. Britain was rather easily blackmailed into submission (it helps when members of MI-6 are neck deep in this) and I doubt any other countries will cause trouble -and for the same reasons. What's more likely is that other countries will unofficially declare open season on Americans, whether they are diplomats, government employees or whatever else. This would vary from extra hassles at customs to being thrown in jail or worse. Just ask middle-aged white people from South Africa what it was like during the 1980s when they traveled abroad and people found out where they were from.

You know, just getting the people out of Gitmo and into the US where they will be required to face a court is a good step in the right direction. Plenty of the questionable candidates will get released as a result of this. Is it perfect? No. But its a darn sight better then what we have had.

That said, I can fully see where Elfdart is going, and I fully understand his no compromise attitude on the issue.

Ugh, it becomes hard to see "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay" as some kind of satire when in reality the news is even more fucked up and absurd. :x

As disappointed as I am by the administration position on this issue, at least it's a step in the right direction.

The closing of Guantanamo, not the position of the presidency itself.
