White Men in charge! The White Male Power Structure!SANTORUM: The other thing we have to do is we have to stand up and say, look, America — Conservatives believe in the stewardship of patrimony. In other words, there are things in America that are really good, that work, have worked for 200 years. And we have a guy named Barack Obama who’s trying to fundamentally rewrite everything, change our economy, change our social structure, change our economy to something new.

So they've worked really well for 200 years? During that time, America had to fight a brutal civil war in the 1860s in order to purge itself of slavery, then endured another century of widespread bigotry before erupting in racial violence in the 1960s. Any institution which is 200 years old should be subjected to more scrutiny, not more blind trust.

The power structure that they advocate has been around for over 200 years? Sounds like we're well overdue for an update.
"The 4th Earl of Hereford led the fight on the bridge, but he and his men were caught in the arrow fire. Then one of de Harclay's pikemen, concealed beneath the bridge, thrust upwards between the planks and skewered the Earl of Hereford through the anus, twisting the head of the iron pike into his intestines. His dying screams turned the advance into a panic."'

Well, technically racial violence in the hundred years preceding the 1960s was often far worse (see the American Al Qaeda, I mean the KKK, and the Tulsa Riots for starters).Darth Wong wrote:So they've worked really well for 200 years? Why doesn't Mr. Santorum just have the guts to come out and say that he doesn't want women voting?
Turns out that a five way cross over between It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Ali G Show, Fargo, Idiocracy and Veep is a lot less funny when you're actually living in it.

Argument from Tradition. Next?
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

I was going to throw this in another thread, but it seems far more relevant here. That page is incredibly vague and poorly written, but from what I can gather (I am having a hard time finding information on this elsewhere) the RNC attacked Obama for criticizing the Constitution, not realizing he was referring specifically to slavery.

...So, is every GOP has-been trying to squeeze out another fifteen minutes of fame or something? Because that's what I think every time yet another one crawls out and starts saying stupid things.

Rick Santorum has always been an idiotic loudmouth, one who became foaming at the mouth under the Bush Administration and then just cut all ties to reality. He actually made denouncing Syria as a bastion of ‘radical Islamic fascism’ a major campaign point in 2006. Unsurprisingly we in Pennsylvania being not dumb as mud bricks responded by overwhelmingly voting to kick him out despite a ten year incumbency. And no one even really liked the guy Bob Casey who defeated him. He was a giant meh of a candidate. Really Santorum could have never won on his own in the first place, his initial election was in many respects a backlash against Clinton.
I remember another of his brilliant gems was a bill to ban the National Weather Service… from reporting the weather… so people would be forced to watch commercial TV news reports for weather information. He also proposed we could destroy Iran by funding Iranian workers to go on strike and some other equally dumb stuff.

Why do some Americans think that 200 years is such a long time to develop a governance system? Feudalism in Europe existed for at least six or seven centuries (possibly longer) in some form before it was replaced by absolutism and then, finally, into some form of democracy/republicanism/constitutional monarchy.
By Santorum's logic, it must mean feudalism is at least three times better than American version of democracy, *I'm a smarmy asshole*?![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.
