PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- A Hampton, N.H., man was charged with trespassing after attempting to get into Portsmouth High School before President Barack Obama spoke at a health care town hall Tuesday, police said.
Richard Young, 62, was detained by Secret Service personnel after he attempted to get into the high school, police said. The high school had been secured at the time in advance of the president's visit.
Police said he was also in possession of a folding pocketknife. Police said he could face more serious federal charges.
Young's pickup truck was also seized as evidence after it was swept by Secret Service agents. Police said they couldn't comment on whether anything was found inside the truck.
Google kept bringing this story up with a comment about a secret service bomb dog making a 'hit' on the truck before it was towed. It appears to have vanished. Developing, it seems.

If he's not trying to assassinate president Obama then it sounds like he's one of those open-carry nuts that run around for the sole purpose of seeing how they'll be treated by law enforcment and what a better place than where the president will be speaking...I hate those guys.
Man I saw that guy on the news earlier, several different times, they kept going back to him again and again, and every signal time he wasn’t doing a damn thing except holding that sign in a crowd of other people. Ten to one they bullshitted an excuse up to arrest him, since open carry is 100% legal in New Hampshire. I highly doubt he tried to get into anything.
As for the truck, bomb dogs will ‘hit’ on the smell of gunpowder so odds are if that was legit at all it was because the dog smelled handgun ammo.

I totally support them "bullshitting" a reason to arrest someone who is choosing to take an action that is going to alarm a significant number of people.
Destructionator XIII wrote:The guy carrying the gun wasn't arrested. The arrest story in the OP is a completely different person, arrested for carrying a knife to the meeting, and they later found an unlicensed gun in his truck.
But, again, the guy openly carrying was NOT arrested. The pictures and the story in the OP have nothing to do with one another.
Considering the country's history with Presidents being assassinated I'm amazed there aren't laws on the books about carrying weapons within a certain proximity to the President already.

Frankly, I find the reporters' reactions fucking bizarre. "Why can't we get rid of him now?" Well, I don't know, maybe because he's on private property where he has permission to be and has committed no fucking crime?
He's a Ron Paul voter. He's not just opposed to Healthcare reform, he's opposed to direct taxation, medicare and social security. Oh and Obama may or may not be a citizen.

It certainly sounds like a good way to become the Secret Service's new best friend.

Carrying a loaded firearm in the vicinity of a person who recieves thousands of death threats a day? If only stupidity were a crime.

My personal theory is that if you're an open carry enthusiast then your chances of being an idiot shoot up dramatically. I'm pleased to see that my theory continues to build support via examples like this moron.
Oh yeah. Even in my opinion, gun rights advocate, he is skirting the line. Carrying a gun with a sign quoting the first half of Jefferson's little speach where the last half is 'with the blood of tyrants' where the president is speaking? This guys is a loony attention whore.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Indeed. Just like the fuckwits talk show hosts are to blame for ratcheting up violence with their triads, open carry gun nuts at protests is just fucking tempting fate and the odds for a tragedy to happen.

See, I understand the whole open carry thing being legal, but just like with concealed carry there are places and times where while it may be legal for you to do it, you probably should just leave your gun at the house (or at the very least locked in your car or someshit). Just because you can do something doesn't always mean you should.

If someone showed up at a Bush appearance in, say, December of 2001 similarly equipped...can you imagine?
It's a blatant implication to assassinate the President, period.
I'd say it was a blatant invite to martyr the sign holder. After all, the saying is that the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I mean, surely he's a patriot. Right?
Joking aside, shouldn't the Secret Service be paying him a visit sometime soon? They don't exactly take these things lightly.

They have already pulled his entire life story down to the last time he threw a tantrum in a store when he was six. He will get get a file in the Secret Services list of "know potentials" and from here on the Secret Service will be keeping an eye on him whenever Obama goes to speak anywhere near where he lives.

But at what point do you say that the risk of a complete lunatic openly carrying a gun into this space and shooting someone in the face trumps the merits of allowing people to openly carry guns into this space?
Because that actually happens. Some people are in fact disturbed enough to just walk up to someone and shoot them for no reason other than their own insanity, especially when the target is famous. Especially when a significant fraction of the crazy people in the country are all encouraging each other to hate that one guy.
'Everyone at the protest would be safer if everyone had carried like me!' was his final explanation after being prompted enough during an interview. Yea, everyone except the President, who probably doesn't count on account of being black.

Body armor doesn't do much against AP rounds or a lucky headshot.
Which does not make it useless - it still reduces the chance of a lethal hit.
But wait, you can get AP rounds in the US?! Are you telling me that you can own them legally?
This stuff is prohibited by the Kriegswaffenkontrollgesetz (regulation of war weaponery) around here...

Well, maybe not legally, but then again if someone intended to shoot the President they're not going to be concerned much about laws.

Body armor is also really impractical when you have to do meet-and-greets, as well as a lot of waving and gesturing.
Remember, you do not want to appear as mistrusting your fellow patriots, so showing up to greet them with body armor on - which they will notice - is not a particularly popular idea.

We have a problem in SLC where this one idiot will open carry two revolvers on each side of his hip during the LGBT parade. He makes people uncomfortable because he seems a bit off and I think it's fucked up to open carry in any place where large numbers of people are gathering due to all the mass shootings especially when one happened right in SLC.

Wait, four revolvers total, or one on either side?
