Sestak defeats Specter

WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter on Tuesday was defeated in a Democratic primary in his bid for a sixth term after taking the risky step of switching from the GOP.

Voters picked U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak as the party's nominee and rejected the 80-year-old Specter in his first Democratic campaign.

With 65 percent of precincts reporting, Sestak received 339,402 votes, nearly 53 percent. Specter received 304,179 votes, about 47 percent.

The vote also was a defeat for President Barack Obama, who supported Specter when he abandoned the Republican Party last year. In speaking to supporters after the race was called, Specter thanked Obama for his support.

The moderate Specter had cast his switch as a decision of principle after inflaming the GOP by voting for Obama's economic stimulus bill. But many Democratic voters questioned his motives.

Sestak faces Republican Pat Toomey in the fall election.

Specter has been a fixture in American politics for three decades and served in the Senate since 1981, and his switch to the Democrats was a theme that dominated the race.

Obama and other top Democrats embraced Specter, who used his willingness to cross party lines on key votes to bolster his clout in Congress.

Sestak, a retired Navy vice admiral who has represented a suburban Philadelphia district since 2007, accused Specter of switching parties to save his job. He said Specter couldn't be trusted to support Democratic Party values.
All I can say is, yay. I volunteered for Sestak, making phone calls and giving out fliers at a county fair. Voting for him was also my first time voting, as I turned eighteen last December.

Sestak is polling better against Toomey than Specter was and his views are more in line with mine. What's more, he's not having serious health problems, a real concern with Specter, especially given that we might get a Republican governor here (or, in a best-case scenario, the socially-moderate Democrat Dan Onorano, who has all but won the Democratic nomination).

So yeah. Good first time voting, good election, good night.

I voted for Sestak, and I voted for Specter in the general election 2004. I'm tired of hearing "he gets things for us" as an excuse to vote for him. If I wanted that I'd move to goddamn West Virginia, there's only so much mileage one can take that claim.

Also voted for Sestak. I went to vote a few minutes after 7 in the evening and my local polling place (an elementary school) was empty but for the half-dozen poll-workers, a man who had voted before me and was on his way out the door, and an older man holding some papers and waiting in the foyer who came up to me and said, "Republican?"

"No, Democrat."

"Oh, well I don't have anything for you."

Actually, I've been registered Independent for years, but switched to Democrat to vote in the last presidential primaries because in Pennsylvania, you cannot vote in Primary elections without being Democrat or Republican. I never switched back. Slightly annoying to be questioned like that, but whatever. If there was a Democrat counterpart in the building, he wasn't near the doors.

Anyway, yes, it was close to closing time, but I was still surprised how there was no one else there but me. It was cold and rainy and the usual fluff on the news talked about how the weather was keeping people at home.

If you wanted Sestak to win, congrats. I just hope he can win the general election.

Doubtful, polls indicate a very very weak turn out in the primary which means there will be a weak turnout of Democrats in the general.
