A bit hard, but fair in my opinion. Is there anything big that Obama did actually accomplish so far with regards to civil liberties?

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

We could, up until about 3-4 months ago, then Comedy Central suddenly decided that in the UK we're not allowed to view their sites anymore. God only knows why, but it's quite irritating, since it means I can't get access to any of the extended interviews.Thanas wrote:I am in Germany. “The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that the English language is as pure as a crib-house whore. It not only borrows words from other languages; it has on occasion chased other languages down dark alley-ways, clubbed them unconscious and rifled their pockets for new vocabulary. “

Because they license their content to Channel 4, you can watch some of it on 4 on Demand, but not all of it IIRC.Minischoles wrote:We could, up until about 3-4 months ago, then Comedy Central suddenly decided that in the UK we're not allowed to view their sites anymore. Re: Obama and his record on civil liberties so far
So far in office, Obama is doing a good job.
He is working to keep the majority of his campaign promises (across the entire 'subject spectrum'). He is also dealing with issues as they arise.
Now, some stuff is taking longer then people would like, and he's going to make the odd screw-up. But you know what? That's pretty standard for anyone in any position. It's the very rare situtation where someone can just walk in, and go 'okay, here is how things are going to be, as of next Tuesday' and "Bam" they are done. Especially in a Democracy/Bueracracy the size and complexity (redudency) of the United States Fed. Government.
He also has a very large mess to clean up in the form of the Wars the previous administration started, the economic problems that have been 'germinating' for years, and the fact the Democracts (his own political party) have their heads so far up their asses, their tongues are on a first name basis with the their own appendix.
So, so far, he's going a good job. The question is; can he keep it up, keep his campaign promises, and end up with a really good 'final' track record on civil liberties?
For the sake of our American membership, I hope so. However, this is American politics, so I'm not holding my breath.

I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.
It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.

I'm not sure ending the torture of prisoners and letting them have trials is something that requires large amounts of red tape. All you need to do is stop obstructing them.

Re: Obama and his record on civil liberties so far
While much of it is flawed, Obama deserves some credit for what he's successfully pushed through.
His healthcare reform is staggering. There hasn't been anything NEAR that level of good reform bill since Nixon.
Stimulus wasn't ideal, and the recession continued(As every Keyesnian Economist said it would with such a small package), but it provided alot of help.
Credit Card reform! WHen did another administration even try?
DADT is exorciably moving towards being LAW, not a reversible executive order.
The Matthew Shepard Act, which vastly improved hate crime legislation, especially for the disabled and transgender.
Passes Lily Ledbetter fair pay legislation.
Expanded SCHIP.
Tobacco Regulation.
And finally, gives a speech including not only baldly stating that peak oil is real, and corporations police themselves is nonsense, as well as a push for clean energy.
Yet his left-wing critics can still be replaced with a small BASIC script, as all they ever say to these accomplishments is 'Not Enough'.
