I've recently been hearing a fair few comments from various people, most of which happen to be American, that Obama isn't actually a proper/full/born-there US Citizen (I'm not sure the term for that) and as such is inelligible for the Presidency

Now, my rational brain tells mehe wouldn't have got that far without someone noticing such a thing, so the whole idea is probably some internet meme generated by butt-hurt Republicans

Nevertheless, is there any grain of truth to this?

No. It's a popular lie that's been spread around since before the 2008 preliminaries. The rationale involved is backwards, tortured and if applied equally McCain wouldn't be an American citizen either.

The President is required by the Constitution to be a natural born citizen. People who become citizens later in life are not eligible for the office.

It's debunked time and time and time again, but conservative shitflingers just can't get over their 2008 sour grapes, so they'll do anything in their power to de-legitimatize Obama and his administration. Not even John McCain questioned Obama's citizenship, so that should give you an idea how far out the birthers are.
