Obama to repeal Don't Ask Don't tell

(NECN: John Moroney) - This morning marks a major victory for gay rights.

President Obama is signing into law a repeal of the "don't ask don't tell" law, that will let gay and lesbian men and women openly serve in the U.S. military.

While this is huge, the battle is not quite over yet. Opponents are saying they will try to repeal the law, for now, but the President and his supporters are savoring this victory.

Congressman Barney Frank of Massachusetts said the change is overdue.

"For those who are worried about the radical homosexual agenda, let me put them on notice," he said. "Two down, two to go."

The Senate repealed the 17-year-old policy over the weekend, several days after it passed in the House.

Some lead Republicans in the Senate believe it could hurt the combat readiness of our troops overseas.

"It could harm the battle effectiveness, which is so vital to the survival of our young men and women in the military," said Sen. John McCain.

"Repealing this policy will make our military stronger," said Sen. Harry Reid. '"Some have said it's not the time to repeal this policy, and they're right. It should have been done yesterday."

Despite the signing of the bill this morning, the Pentagon says it will take a couple of months to implement the military's new policy. As a result, 'don't ask don't tell' will remain in place until then.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. Yeah it will take a few months, but the fact remains that it actually will happen. Hopefully, this trend might continue.
