Rahm Emmanuel wins in Chicago

Post by Thanas »

He is now the new mayor.
Tuesday night, Emanuel won one of the most powerful municipal seats in the nation handily, securing well over the 50 percent of the vote needed to avoid a runoff and beating his nearest opponent, former Daley aide and Chicago schools chief Gery Chico, by more than 30 points.

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

Once the residency issue was killed, there was really no chance that Emmanuel was going to lose, and voter turnout (something like 40%) attests to that. Funnily enough, the major networks actually pushed the primetime shows forward an hour so there could be an hour of "election coverage." Except it was all over by then and they ran out of things to talk about in less than a half hour.

That said, Emmanuel's either a horrendous public speaker (kinda funny since he has a master's from Northwestern in speech/communications) or was drunk during his victory speech. There wasn't a single sentence where he wasn't either stuttering, stumbling over words, mispronouncing things, or just ad-libbing jokes to members of the crowd. :P

You gotta hand it to Braun, though. She went from "consensus black candidate" to "I came in last place." :P
