Cain: Perry camp sign 'just plain insensitive'
Hunting camp once leased by Perry's family and frequented by the Texas governor was reportedly called 'Niggerhead'

Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain criticized the name of a hunting camp once leased by Gov. Rick Perry's family as "just plain insensitive" in an appearance on Fox News Sunday.
The name of the camp — "Niggerhead" — was first reported by the Washington Post on Saturday. The paper said the name was painted on a rock at the entrance of the property.
Perry reportedly began hosting fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters at the secluded ranch early in his career. The offensive phrase has been painted over, but the Post's sources and the Perry campaign differ on when that was done.
The Post reports that the name can still be seen through the paint.
"My reaction is, that's just very insensitive," Cain told Fox. "[There] isn't a more vile, negative word than the N-word, and for him to leave it there as long as he did, before I hear that they finally painted over it, is just plain insensitive to a lot of black people in this country."
Ray Sullivan, Perry's communication's director, pushed back against the Post report on Sunday.
Sullivan said the governor's father, Ray, painted over the name in the early 1980s. That conflicts with the accounts of seven sources who spoke to the Post on the condition of anonymity. They claim the offensive name was visible during the 1980s and 1990s, when Perry launched his political career, with one source saying the word could be seen as late as 2008.
Sullivan, in a response to NBC News' Carrie Dann, disputed the accuracy of those accounts.
"The rock was obscured in 1983 or 1984 and remained so," he said. "Named interviewees in the story corroborate that. The story has no named sources seeing the name on the rock in later 80s and 90s claim and those unnamed sources contradict one another."
Sullivan said Perry's last visit to the property was in December 2006, and that he stopped leasing it in 2007. The Perry campaign says the story's suggestion that Perry brought guests to the property when the offensive language was visible is also false.
When asked about the name on the rock last week, Perry reportedly told the Post it is "offensive name that has no place in the modern world."
The Post reported that the phrase was still "faintly visible" beneath a coat of white paint as recently as this past summer.
Man oh man oh man, how could they have missed this for so long? Perry is done, unfortunately, as I think out of the 2 frontrunners he was the easier to beat.

I remember an article in some sensational magazine that I saw alleging that Perry was affiliated with the KKK. This is probably what they meant.
I'm not one to normally bash political contenders, but given the GOP's regressive policies as of late, let's hope that the Republicans' other scandals will come to light, showing the public what vile assholes they are and associate with.

So, it may be a racially insensitive term from an earlier time that was painted over in 1983 or 1984 or in the 1990s or 2008. Maybe it was common usage when Perry's daddy opened the hunting camp. I agree that it's offensive and a gaffe on the part of the Perry campaign, but since I'm favoring Herman Cain anyway I can't say I'm all that choked up about it.

Is it really over for him, though? I don't live in the US so I can't really follow this easily, but from what I picked up on teh interwebz, there doesn't seem to be too much fuss over it. People aren't happy, but then people weren't happy about a fair number of things (spit) Sarah Palin did, bitch still managed to be extremely, dangerously popular. Obviously, I really do hope the wanker gets booted back into the shadows for this and his general asshattery, but will this really be enough to do it?

I'm going to be a bit of a Devil's Advocate here: IF what Count Chocula says is true, then this isn't actually overt racism from Perry, and if so, whatever consequences he suffers, he suffers unjustly. Now, I think Perry is terrible and deserves to lose, but if he is blacklisted because of this, I'm as concerned as I would be if a Progressive politician were sidelined for saying or doing something that sounds awful but isn't if you actually think about it.
How is it unjust even if what Chocula says is true? Niggerhead is obviously racially based even if it means what he says it means. It's not like the word niggardly where there is no racial connotation.

True, but racially based doesn't mean that it's racially used. It's perfectly possible that Perry didn't have any racial meaning intended with this rock, assuming he had anything to do with it, and it's not just a painted rock that was at a camp he owned that he didn't give any thought to. I mean, the British slang 'fag' was brought up already, and it and 'faggot' do share the same origin.
I dunno. Maybe it's easier for me to give him the benefit of the doubt since he wouldn't be my head of State if he wins, but I think it would be better to look before anyone leaps.

Am I the only one who finds the fact that there is a semi racist word written on a fucking rock to be a total non issue? I very much doubt he thought twice about a random rock in the middle of nowhere on his hunting ranch as being very important for determining his role within the power structure of government.
Seriously of all the things for people to be criticizing this man for I find the fact that it would be this that could sink him to be more offensive than I find the word. And considering all the passive aggressive stupid and intolerant crap that falls out of this man's mouth on a regular basis having potentially painted a naughty word is such an infantile thing to worry about.

I don't get something about this. Is this word nigger the same that negro (in Spanish)? I made a search and it turn out they are, but here you can call a black dude, well negro, and it won't be offended. Actually a lot of people that are not black, but slightly dark call themselves negros. And negros was the word used by the Spanish here while the black people and the native population where their slaves. And talking about it like the "N-word" seems so fucking childly and immature...
Of course this by no means excuse that dick head about using the word like that if it's a derogatory term (I won't name a ranch of mine "Go fuck yourself" or "Womans are all Cunts").
