This gets better and... wait, no it doesn't. If the Republican party can't vet it's own pre-primary candidates - as if Her Alaskan Highness wasn't proof enough - they deserve to be tossed on the scrapheap of history. This is not the early-90s any more, these things won't remain hidden for long.

And there is a party on the planet has has evaluated all 960 possible choices for US President assuming you count only members of Congress, Governors, leading activists and just the oldest 10% of all State Houses. And you still would not have found Mr Cain to judge him before he got into the debates.

Ginger White says she and Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain had an affair that lasted more than a decade in a report released by Atlanta-based station Fox 5 on Monday.

The Georgia businesswoman said what occurred between herself and Cain was "pretty simple." She explained, "I was aware that he was married. And I was also aware I was involved in a very inappropriate situation, relationship."

White opened up about the alleged affair, which she said went on for thirteen years, over the holiday weekend.

Fox 5 reports:

When [Cain's] new book, CEO of SELF, came out in 2001, she says Cain once again autographed it for her writing, "Friends are forever! Everything else is a bonus."

Even before White's accusations came to light, Cain sought to do damage control. During an interview on CNN on Monday, the presidential candidate preemptively said he was expecting to face allegations of "an affair for an extended period of time" and denied any wrongdoing.

While Cain did not identify White by name during the appearance, he said of his accuser, "It is someone that I know who is an acquaintance that I thought was a friend."

In the past month, sexual harassment allegations leveled against Cain by multiple women have been thrust into the public eye. The Republican hopeful has vehemently denied their charges.

"Here we go again," Cain said on Monday. "I didn't do anything wrong."

In speaking to Fox 5, White alleged that her physical relationship with Cain ended before the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza launched his campaign roughly eight months ago. She said, however, their communication continued beyond that point.

White predicted that her decision to go public with her side of the story will likely mark the end of her relationship with Cain. Nevertheless, she said, "We have a friendship now.

I'd be very interest to hear some dates on this. I'm wondering if Mr Cain had this affair plus his other sexual harassment issues all going on at the same time.

Yeah, it looks like the alleged affair (13 years long and ending 8 months ago) started around the time of the harassment allegations (1997-99) [Source].

At this point we should stick a deuterium pellet inside of Herman Cain or his campaign and see if we can get fusion out of it.

My point regarding Palin was that their vetting process sucks, not that she was involved in the primaries - I know she wasn't, it was a bolt out of the blue when she was picked. I well remember the N&P threads here, they're still archived.

Mr. Bean: Yes, a vetting process would not have caught Cain if they had gone this way - but there are one or two other candidates who are never even called for debates. And all debates have been advertised as Republican pre-primary debates. At what point were the Republicans going to stand up and say "Whoa! Who is this guy claiming to stand from our side? Lets look him up. If we find something egregious, we'll get CNN et al to not invite him for our debates." Other candidates who are Republicans have not been invited by the hosts (Roemer and McCotter), so there is obviously a selection procedure.
