NY school sued for allegedly failing to act on anti-Semitic taunts

(JTA) – A suburban New York father is suing his school district over the anti-Semitic taunting of his son.

Robert Slade filed the suit last week alleging that officials at Northport High School on Long Island took no action to stop a group of 20 students from traumatizing his son with taunts such as “Jews are disgusting,” “Being Jewish must suck,” “Hitler was a good person” and “My love for you burns like a thousand Jews in an oven.”

The suit says that 20 students mercilessly teased the boy in person and on Facebook during his freshman year in 2011 until he was forced to leave, the New York Post reported Monday.

My question is why doesn't the school have an anti-bully policy? My guess would be these kids did it because they learn that shit from home. School may have not done anything about it because they are ok with it too.

Anyway, on topic, without more information there really is no conclusion we can make here. The article does not give us any actual facts, just a very vague story with no authentication of any sort. Let's take this with a grain of salt until such a point that we have a better idea what happened.

I doubt that. Most of these kids' parents probably think Antisemitism is vile (after all, their grandparents were fighting Nazis), while the kids probably think Antisemitism is hilarious due to watching South Park and thinking Eric Cartman's extreme and pervasive attitudes are funny as shit and that saying Antisemitic things to Jews is just a big old joke (much like those other kids who had the "Kick a Ginger" day event on Facebook some years back).

As for why the schools didn't act on it: schools in the United States almost never act on bullying in a proactive manner. Turns out if the school tries to stop bullies who are "good" white kids, then the parents throw a huge shitfit and threaten the school, so most schools simply don't do anything effective out of fear of angry parents.

It's hard to do an expose on a policy of just... not doing much of anything, especially since children don't go to the media to complain on their own behalf.

The problem of parents threatening legal action or other manipulation against schools that try to punish their darling little sociopathic bastards is hardly new, though. You know those zero-tolerance fighting policies that punish the kid who's getting beaten the same as the one who's doing the beating? That's one of the reasons they exist.

(The other reason they exist is that a ton of fights between children are just that- FIGHTS, where both parties acted in ways that make it obvious that the violence was by mutual consent. The zero-tolerance policy has obvious, horrible consequences for victims of bullying, in exchange for saving the school from having to freaking guess every time two overactive adolescent males get into a shoving match and both insist the other one started it...)

Seriously? I mean, I'm not making excuses here or anything like that, but...really? The population there...Jews aren't exactly a tiny excluded minority in that part of Long Island, is all I'm saying. Wow. That's a surprise.
