The idea of insurance is to take spikes in expenses and spread them out to make them easier to handle. This does not apply to contraception, where the need for contraception is already both widespread and ongoing. It would be like buying insurance for your water bill.

If you want to subsidise the cost of contraception to reduce the perceived cost go right ahead, but it's not insurance.

Except that "health insurance" isn't like other insurance. Because a healthy life is ultimately a human right, and some people need their "health insurance" to cover even regular costs like contraception, vaccinations and such.

Also, unlike with other insurance, in healthcare prevention is worth A LOT. By your logic we shouldn't cover regular checkups either - those are a calculable cost after all, right?
But not covering those will ultimately to a vast increase in healthcare cost, which then has to be covered by "health insurance".

Bottom line:
Health insurance is a misnomer and not comparable to, say, car insurance. Because health is a ultimate necessity for everyone.

It's functionally equivalent to if not actually preventative medicine which also gets covered under insurance because of the risk of greater costs later on as covered in previous posts. Even more than that, it's getting short shrift compared to boner pills of all things. Boner pills. What life-threatening issues do boner pills in the context of being boner pills treat? They sure aren't getting covered for the niche treatments they're used in in those numbers. What massive expense do they prevent? Hell, why don't they get not covered because they cause an increased risk of greater costs later on?
