If this happened at the start of the race when the runners are bunched up, it could have been much worse. It appears that most of the runners were not hurt as badly as whoever was on the curb, behind the barricades.

It more than likely is an attack now, but it does make me wonder why this didn't happen at the start. There was remembrance silence at the start for the Sandy Hook victims, apparently. There would be more people and closer together.

We don't know if this is a disgruntled taxpayer, some religious extremist or something else secular. And I wish the media would stop jumping all over every damn theory they can imagine.

It's quite sick. I'm trying to avoid that in my Twitter feed. When previously we've had violence like this, people have even nitpicked the real photos for being fake, because no one has really seen the unsanitised imagery normally allowed for news broadcast. In this ever connected age, the blood won't even be dry before people can see it on the other side of the planet.

That will most likely increase, but it seems mercifully low for an event like this. Still tragic but it could have been so much worse.

Edit/Update: Thankfully, they (my aunt and uncle) work about a half hour's drive away from where the marathon takes place at and avoid the area due to the congestion and road closings. I just got off the phone with my dad and he said that they're all ok.

The images I've seen show something that doesn't appear to be a high-explosive. Potentially home made, and I have heard there were BBs or other shrapnel within the casing.

Additionally, there are ALREADY scams on Twitter, with fakes Boston Marathon accounts pledging $1 to victims for every retweet. Un-fucking-believable.
