Greek Neonazis graduate to straight-up murder

Translated as well as I can.
34-year-old shockingly murdered in Keratsini by Golden Dawn member

Greek government and police are on alert after the cold-blooded murder that occured Thursday midnight. The victim was stabbed in the heart by a 45-year-old, with all indications pointing towards political motives, as the perpetrator declares himself to be a Golden Dawn member.

According to eyewitnesses, a group of rightwing extremists ambushed the 34-year-old and his friends as they were leaving from a cafeteria in the area [...]. At this point, the 45-year-old appeared; moving up the street in his car in reverse, he exited the vehicle, stabbed the victim and then tried to get away in his car.

Before expiring, the victim is said to have shown the perpetrator at a group of DIAS officers [the motorcycle unit of the Greek police] who had just arrived at the scene, along with more eyewitnesses. The perpetrator was arrested; the knife was found nearby

Eyewitnesses to the event

As attested by witnesses, tensions began inside the cafeteria shortly after the end of the Olympiacos-Paris St. Germain football match, watched by at least two groups. An intense verbal altercation, political in character, followed, and the victim departed along with his friends.

The victim and his friends soon realized they were being followed by members of the other group and picked up the pace. However, a short distance later they were boxed in by another group of people that apeared in front of them.

A confrontation followed -it's unknown whether verbal or physical- and at that time the perpetrator appeared, illegally driving down the one-way street, got out and stabbed the victim in cold blood.

As the victim's father said, "Someone in the cafeteria talked about the Golden Dawn, someone else heard him, made a call, and some thirty people jumped them over here". "My son told the others to go and went out ahead", he said.

A woman eyewitness says: "They were 30-40 people, tall, well-built. And an attack is happening. They pass between us and they suddenly disappear. And then a kid shouts 'they got him, they got him, they stabbed him'."

Another man, also an eyewitness, says: "I saw them running all over the place. One of them was wearing a Golden Dawn shirt that was ripped, and he was trying to leave in a car. The rest had disappeared; I saw a couple in the sidestreet, bu them more appeared."

Questions about police conduct

Information about the police's stance are conflicting, as there are accounts that the officers were present but delayed to act. The victim's father accuses the police that the officers were asked to intervene and refused. He says: "A female officer came ahead with her gun and told him 'hey, don't use that knife'. My son's girlfriend told her 'break them up, don't you see what's happening', and she said 'there's too many of them, we can't cope'."

According to the police representative Mr. Parthenis, the victim had already been stabbed when the officers arrived: "The perpetrator arrived in his car and, after parking, used a knife to inflict some injuries on the victim. A DIAS group patrolling the area was notified by the dispatcher and rushed to the scene, where eyewitnesses pointed at the 45-year-old, who was arrested instantly."

The 45-year-old was also indicated by the victim himself. He was arrested while moving towards his car, where they also found a bloodied knife.

Confessed and declared himself a Golden Dawn member

The man confessed to the stabbing, maintaining it was self-defense. He said that he was a GD ideologue, without specifying whether he was a card-carrying member. He did say that he was visiting the party's local headquarters 5-6 times a week.

The police has already moved to monitoring telecommunications, as it was assumed that members of the original group began calling for reinforcements after the cafeteria squabble and the perpetrator was one of those called. The police assume that he killed a man he didn't even know.
[...]

Since this [ie Wendesday] morning, the police has been searching GD offices in Athens accompanied by state prosecutors, including the central GD headquarters. Nothing suspicious had been found up to midday, however searches will continue. Through its representative I. Kasidiaris, Golden Dawn has condemned the event, saying they had nothing to do with it, and blasted police searches as 'illegal storming'.
Go fuck yourselves. Just go fuck yourselves you fucking thugs. Just follow your dear Adolf.

English language report from The Guardian

It certainly looks like this was politically motivated, if the victim was a known anti-fascist figure.

Hopefully GD is fucked now, looks like they're about to be outlawed.

The fuckers know they operate under what is, more or less, unofficial tolerance. Human rights organizations are full of complaints and reports of attacks that are scarcely followed by the police. The police can also get bent, their friendliness towards the Nazis is well known and has been for years. The government is either too weak to force cops to do their jobs, or I suspect they like the fascists too much to stop them from wailing on the left and immigrants.

The only thing that might change is that a few of their voters will cringe at their thuggishness (just seach for a video of Ilias Kasidiaris and tell me he doesn't look like a thug), or at least they won't increase their voter base with yet more blithering idiots.

So last I heard there we're a few thousand people casually rioting in the centre of Athens and making their way towards the Golden Dawn headquarters, but it's a little hard to get updated in English. Did anything else eventuate?

Update on some bits: Roupakiotis (the murderer) is now in jail awaiting trial, and they're afraid that any foreign or antifascist inmates will shank him. They are rifling through their communications these days to find who alerted the murderer.

Also, some former members of the Golden Dawn have things to say. They aren't pleasant:

http://www.megatv.com/megagegonota/arti ... d=32021298
Silence is over for two ex-GDers

Former and current members of the GD break omerta and reveal the organization and the leaders of the strike groups that spread terror, but also sell protection.

Local organization of Nicaia was "exemplar" and had Lagos' mark

The former GDer that spoke to the Ethnos newspaper said that the local office of Nicaia [the one frequented by Roupakiotis] was under the supervision of MP Y. Lagos. As he stressed: "The only thing we knew was that we report to Lagos and will seek his OK before doing anything. He also deleted us [him and other members], as commanded by Giorgos."

An active member of GD, spreaking at Sunday Vima, describes the Nicaia organization: "Nicaia [a suburb] was our best during the last few years, along with the central one in Athens. The success is owed to the supervision and control of Lagos. They were first in recent mobilizations, both in Athens and the country. The attack on the Communist Party members that happened ten days ago was directed from there."

As can be seen by their interviews, the Nicaia office was militarily structured, even having a mobile 'battalion' patterned after police motor units.

Asked what exactly are 'the Innovas', the former GDers says: "They are the motirized unit. When we say 'the Innovas are here', we're referring to the motobikes they use to go quickly wherever they're needed."

Did Michaloliakos know?

The former member [the guys are anonymous throughout the article] was asked whether it was true that the leader of the Nicaia cell, G. Patelis, communicated with Lagos at the time of the murder. He replies: "Eh, of course. They'd call Patelis and he'd call Lagos."

He guesses that Michaloliakos [the party leader, let Trainwreck remind you] was aware of the incident at Keratsini: "I can't be sure. Based on what I've lived, the leader is always notified and gives his OK."

The ex-member doubts that Lagos decided the hit on his own without notifying the leader, and when asked whether Michaloliakos knew about the murder of P. Fyssas he replies: "I think yes. There's a hierarchy. A member talks to the local cell, the cell notifies the supervising MP, the MP goes to the leader."

Paramilitary with a political figleaf?

The active GD member talks about teams that conceal their tracks and engage in urban guerilla warfare: "These teams can hit like urban guerillas. They have rules of secrecy mostly to leave no traces and plan their escape route. The strike teams are used in special occasions like revenge for any crime committed against a Greek, or one of our members who's being treasonous."

He also gives details on the way of training but also the persons responsible: "Such exercises happen occasionally in forests around Athens and elsewhere, always with great secrecy and care to not get noticed by police etc. As trainers, we use former and active members of OYK [Underwater Demolition Squads], LOK [Mountain Raiders Companies] and other special forces. Also, a lot of people in our strike teams hail from special forces."

"GD has a special organization that most people ignore that somewhat comes from the Nazis, but mostly comes from the National Youth Organization founded by Metaxas in 1936. Like them, GD has phalanx leaders, squadron leaders and the rest. We give great care for the military training of all members."

However, it seems that this powerful and rigid organization also leads to crime: "Down at the central office, we often learn that some of our members take advantage of the operational capabilities conferred by training and become protection sellers, oppressing storeowners."

Remarkable savagery and hatred

Another ex-GDer interviewed by the Sunday Vima says that they had a clear distinction in victims: "We always said, 'work first and leisure second'. Work was hunting anarchists and leisure was hunting Pakistanis. That was the motto."

His account of an attack against two immigrants is shocking: "They'd been to some mountains and, returning, they found two Pakistanis standing by the side of the road. They grabbed one of them and beat him, and then he [the man recounting the story] ran up and kicked his head like he was doing a penalty kick. I had just frozen there in place and the guy was taking pride at it, and at that point the countdown began before I got away.
And the reason they still exist legally, and their leaders aren't in jail and the police isn't purged of sympathizers is that... fuggedboutit. Also, I didn't change the terminology: all that talk about operational capabilities and the like is how members of this legitimate political party view themselves.

No, they don't need exposure. They don't need time to talk so they'll look like idiots. What they need now is a government determined to actually neuter their links to the police and army and send these fuckers in jail. Hey Samaras you useless waste of flesh, the IMF wants layoffs and the police is infested by fascist pigs. How about doing something costructive for once and sticking your cock in something other than the teachers?

BBC News wrote:Greek police have arrested the leader of the far-right Golden Dawn party, Nikolaos Michaloliakos, on charges of forming a criminal organisation.

Three more Golden Dawn MPs, a leader in an Athens suburb and nine other party members have also been arrested.

The arrests come amid anger over the murder on 18 September of anti-racist musician, Pavlos Fyssas.

A man held for the stabbing told police he was a Golden Dawn supporter, though the party strongly denies any link.

One of the MPs arrested on Saturday was party spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris.

Another, Ilias Panayiotaros, told reporters before giving himself up: "Shame on them, the people will lift Golden Dawn higher."

A number of other warrants are believed to have been issued.

Golden Dawn has called on its supporters to rally outside the police headquarters in Athens and has vowed to fight back.

A text message read: "We call upon everyone to support our moral and just struggle against the corrupt system!"

'Bodyguard' held
The killing of Pavlos Fyssas, 34 - whose stage name was Killah P - has sparked protests in Athens and across Greece.

George Roupakias, 45, who said he was a supporter of Golden Dawn, was arrested. He was charged with voluntary manslaughter and illegal possession of a weapon.

The government launched a crackdown, including raids on Golden Dawn premises.

Two senior police officials resigned for "personal reasons" after the killing and another two were suspended. Seven other police officers were suspended.

Greek police also arrested one of their own colleagues who was reportedly working as a bodyguard for the party, during a raid on its offices in the western town of Agrinio on Tuesday.

The government also began an inquiry into the activities of Golden Dawn, which won nearly 7% of the vote in 2012 elections.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has vowed not to let the party "undermine" democracy, and government officials say it must now be treated as a "criminal organisation".

Golden Dawn, Greece's third most popular party, has accused the government of carrying out a witch-hunt over the Fyssas killing.

Mr Michaloliakos, 56, said last week: "Everyone is talking about us without asking us. They are throwing dirt from morning to evening, and these great Democrats are not giving us an inch to respond."

On Friday, Golden Dawn threatened to pull its 18 MPs out of the 300-strong Hellenic Parliament.

Mr Samaras's coalition, which has 155 seats, would then face by-elections.

In recent months, Golden Dawn has been accused of perpetrating attacks on migrants and political opponents - including an attack on Communist Party members earlier this month which is said to have left nine people in hospital.

Golden Dawn officially denies being a neo-Nazi movement, though its badge resembles a swastika, some senior members have praised Adolf Hitler, and its members wear black T-shirts and combat trousers at anti-immigrant demonstrations.
Well, it's a start.

Manslaughter is the literal translation of ανθρωποκτονία, but Greek law has no divide between manslaughter and murder like American law. He's going in for first degree murder.

Good news everybody!
CNN wrote:Athens (CNN) -- The leader of Greece's extreme right wing Golden Dawn party and four party lawmakers have been arrested on charges of forming a criminal gang, Athens police said Saturday.

The arrests of the leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, and lawmakers Elias Kassidiaris, Elias Panagiotaros, Ioannis Lagos and Nikos Mihos are part of a crackdown following a controversial stabbing death.

At least 10 more people have been arrested, including Golden Dawn party members, police said. More than 30 warrants were issued as police operations were launched across Greece Saturday.

One more Golden Dawn lawmaker is still being sought, police said.

Pavlos Fyssas, a popular anti-fascist figure and well-known hip-hop artist with the stage name Killah P, was the victim of the knife attack that was allegedly committed by a Golden Dawn supporter.

Clashes broke out in a working-class Athens suburb last week, as Fyssas' death inflamed already growing concerns about the rising influence of Golden Dawn. The ultranationalist, anti-immigration party has been linked by critics to street violence and neo-Nazism.

The violence came despite police raids of Golden Dawn offices and the arrest of a 45-year-old party supporter who police say admitted killing Pavlos Fyssas.

Kassidiaris last week denied his party's involvement in Fyssas' death, calling it a "heinous crime."

The singer's death has nevertheless led to renewed calls to ban Golden Dawn

The Greek constitution does not allow for political parties to be banned, however, and the party's arrested lawmakers will retain their parliamentary seats unless they are convicted of a crime.

Golden Dawn holds 18 of Parliament's 300 seats.

It is the first time since the restoration of democracy in 1974, following a seven-year junta, that a party leader and members of parliament have been arrested.

Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos, whose socialist Pasok party is part of the governing coalition, said last week that Golden Dawn "must be dealt with as a criminal organization."

In 2012, the party rode a wave of dissatisfaction among some Greeks over internationally imposed austerity measures amid the country's deep financial crisis, winning 7% of the vote and gaining seats in parliament for the first time.

Recent polls had seen support rise as high as 12%. However, since Fyssas' killing last week, opinion polls suggest that Golden Dawn's popularity has dropped.

A poll carried out from September 19 to 21 by Rass, for the Eleftheros Typos newspaper, indicated that support for Golden Dawn had fallen to 5.8%, down from 8.3% on September 15.

Back in 2009, before the financial crisis and ensuing austerity measures hit Greeks hard, the party polled only 0.3%.
Unfortunately this does mean a slight delay until the next Call of Duty features chariots with pintle-mounted MG42s, hoplites with StG44s, and phalanxes with panzerschrecks, all out to recreate Μεγάλη Ελλάδα. We might never get to see the reincarnation of Alexander the Great wielding a Kar98k. :(

The difference between those acts and this seems to be that none of those terrorist acts are committed or sanctioned by the leaders of major parties with seats in the parliament, unlike the case with Golden Dawn.
