Paul Walker Dies in Car Accident

Post by RogueIce »

CNN
Santa Clarita, California (CNN) -- Actor Paul Walker, who shot to fame as star of the high-octane street racing franchise "Fast & Furious," died Saturday in a car crash in Southern California. He was 40.

Walker's publicist Ame van Iden confirmed his death, but said she could not elaborate beyond statements posted on Walker's official Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Walker was a passenger in a friend's car and both were attending a charity event for his organization, Reach Out Worldwide, in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles north of Hollywood.

The website for the charity said the Saturday event was intended to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The crash took place about 3:30 p.m., about 300 yards from the office park where the event was held.

The Santa Clarita Valley Signal, citing a sheriff's deputy at the scene, said a red Porsche appeared to have lost control.

Deputies arrived at the scene to find a vehicle on fire, the sheriff's department said in a statement.

Once fire crews put the flames out, they found two occupants, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.

Saturday evening, all that remained was the burnt mangled metal of the car and a light pole that had been knocked down.

Along with Vin Diesel, the 40-year-old Walker has been one of the stalwarts of the "Fast & Furious" movie series, characterized by its racing scenes and attractive cast.

The box-office success of the first film in 2001 fueled sequels. The series' sixth installment came out earlier this year, topping the Memorial Day weekend box office.

At the time of his death, Walker was working on the seventh film of the franchise, with a scheduled release date of 2014.

On his verified Twitter account, Walker described himself as "outdoorsman, ocean addict, adrenaline junkie ... and I do some acting on the side."

Walker also is the star of "Hours," an independent film scheduled to be released December 13 about a father struggling to keep his newborn infant alive in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Twitter and other social media exploded with reactions to Walker's death.

"Completely numb and saddened to hear of the tragic death of Paul Walker," wrote one posted "Wow."

Hollywood condolences came from Will Smith, Jack Osbourne, DMX and others.

"No, @RealPaulWalker. No. No. No," tweeted Alyssa Milano. "Rest with the angels. You. Sweet boy. #beauty #love #RIP."

CNN's Greg Botelho, David Simpson, Joe Sutton and Jackie Castillo contributed to this report.
[Insert comment about irony here]

This is really sad news, though. I liked him as an actor, and he definitely had a good future ahead with the Fast and Furious franchise going as strong as it is. He died way too young, and he will be missed. :(

Video of burning wreck above. I see skid marks veering off a straight piece of road, which checking up on Google maps is a road inside a large office park that doesn't really go anywhere, but does happen to make a big wide loop.... I'm sure vast amounts of responsible driving were involved in this.

According to Top Gear, it is a difficult car to drive, but very fast. Not a good combination in the wrong hands.

Note: He wasn't driving, he was the passenger. That and the fact that he was headed towards a typhoon-relief charity event makes it all the more tragic.

Whelp, guess they're gonna need a quick script revision over on the Fast & Furious 7 set.

Very sad, especially seeing that he was a passenger.

Coffee, I know nothing of the franchise, do you think it would be easier for them to rewrite the script to put one of the other existing characters in charge, or to bring in a new person to fill the dead man's boots?

I can't say what would be easiest for Fast and Furious 7, but for the franchise as a whole, it wouldn't be hard to write him out. He's settled down with Vin Diesel's character's sister at this point, so a combination of that and his reveal from the last movie could be used to justify him retiring for good.

It was a story with two main characters, and walker played one of them. At the end of Fast n Furious 6, they killed of one of the side-cast and brought in Jason Statham as antagonist. I don't see the series continuing after this movie, but they could easily have a final revenge story with JS killing of PW offscreen, or, if there's enough film reel, cut it up and have him die in a car crash at the beginning of the movie.

Also, more info: his friend wanted to show him a few tricks in a parking lot with his Porsche GT. A few figure 8's later, they crash sideways into a tree, opened up the fuel tank (mounted center) and burned to death together.

The original was bad enough, but apparently this was a tuned/modified example with even more power.

It's certainly an ironic demise given F&F films.

A hundred years ago when I worked security down the street from a theater you'd always know when one of those turds got laid because fuckwits would be streetracing down the same road my site was on.

He wasn't driving, so I wouldn't blame the "accident" on him. Perhaps a lapse in judgement for getting in the car, but who knows if he knew there would be some showing off by the driver. If that's even what happened, of course.

From what I've heard today in the TV sound-bite eulogy, the fascination with cars and speed pre-dates Mr. Walker's role in The Fast and the Furious. Apparently, it was a life-long thing with him, from an early age. Getting the movie role was gravy.

600 hp is not that much these days, even a stock GT-R (Skyline) is up to 550. Numerous high-end turbo tuners models are well over 1000 hp (albeit with poor reliability). The thing is, you either need active yaw control or a very good suspension setup (ideally both, like the Veyron) to make that even vaugely safe for non-racing drivers. The Carrera GT has neither, it was a low-cost adaption of LMP technology to a road car. As with the 911 what little safety margin exists is easily erased by tuners; many RUF models have a reputation for being unforgiving and downright dangerous as well.

My first thought at those horsepower figures Starglider put up was "damn, that's almost as much as a WWII fighter plane." Then it occurred to me that some of these cars are starting to approach the speed of a WWII fighter plane, and surprise was removed.

What Flagg said is all too true. People who popularize streetracing deserve everything that's coming to them. Streetracing is an extremely dangerous, deadly activity which often leads to deaths of innocent bystanders/bydrivers on the roads. Roads are not playgrounds, and streetracing is the most loathesome activity I have encountered in my life. It accumulates the worst types of people: the yuppie rich kids, the junkies and the borderline crazy adrenaline-rush seekers, and does so in a way that endangers others which don't even want to do anything with it.

Paul Walker and his film franchise is kind of like "Breaking Bad", but with the caveeat that Walter White and Jesse Pinkman would be displayed as real protagonists, bathing in riches and kicking ass in their crime syndicate. Fast and Furious is glorifying criminal and deadly illegal sports, and although people don't deserve to die for stupidity, if it happens in the end, well... they only got what's coming to them.
