Harold Ramis dead at 69

Post by Borgholio »

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/gho ... d=22651174
"Ghostbusters" star Harold Ramis has died at 69 years old, United Talent Agency confirmed to ABC News today.

Ramis was known as much for his off-screen work -- writing the "Ghostbusters" films, along with "Groundhog Day" and "Analyze This" -- as he was for playing Dr. Egon Spengler in front of the camera.

Ramis was surrounded by family in his Chicago home, where he's lived since 1996, when he died early this morning from complications of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, his wife Erica Mann Ramis told the Chicago Tribune.

His rare disease involved a swelling of the blood vessels and the report adds that his health issues began in 2010. His condition was so bad in the past, the actor/writer/director had to relearn to walk.

"His creativity, compassion, intelligence, humor and spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved him," read a press release from his agency.

Ramis was a Chicago native and earned a bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He got his start in the late 1960's at Chicago's Second City theater troupe.

His big break came when he penned "National Lampoon's Animal House" in 1978. His directorial debut came in 1980 with "Caddyshack." His latest work was for a 2009 movie "Year One," in which he wrote, directed and was featured in alongside Jack Black and Olivia Wilde. His "Ghostbusters" co-star, Dan Aykroyd, also told ABC News last spring that "Ghostbusters 3" could film this year, and that Ramis was "in on it."

Ramis is survived by his wife Erica, sons Julian and Daniel, daughter Violet and two grandchildren.
Well goddamn it. He was a good actor.

Plus, goodbye any chance of Ghostbusters 3. Shit.

My exact thoughts on hearing of his death. The man wrote some fun movies. I wander if Comedy Central or IFC will end up running tribute marathon of his movies?

Also,I wander if Bill Murray will catch any extra flack from Ghostbusters fans in light of this? IIRC his disinterest has been one of the major things holding up a third movie all these years.

Well I figure they could still do the movie by having a statue of Egon outside one of the science halls at Columbia University. Since GB 3 was supposed to be a "passing of the torch", one of the new busters could be a former student of his.

Plus, the latest script idea that was released had Venkman be a ghost anyways, having died shortly after GB 2. So he could make mention of Egon trying to measure, study, and quantify the afterlife and being so engrossed with it that he didn't bother to re-appear to the others to say hi. Actually...that sounds exactly like what Egon would have done.

So much of my understanding of comedy and the human condition comes from excessive watching and rewatching of his works. They were outrageously funny, but also had a human core.

Seriously, if all you guys know about Ramis is Ghostbusters you have some serious DVD watching to do.

Animal House, Stripes, Back to School, Caddyshack, Analyze This, fucking Groundhogs Day. Hell, even Meatballs. The guy was comedy royalty.

Analyze This is my dad's favorite movie of all time, every once in awhile we'll re-watch it and without fail drive his girlfriend up the wall because we'll quote our whole way through the movie as it rolls.

A great talent in both comedy acting and directing has been lost.

Between his death and Bill Murray's lack of enthusiasm over the project, I have a feeling that we're now going to see the studio go full-tilt on a Ghostbusters remake instead.

If done well a remake might not be a bad thing, granted it must be done well and doing comedy well is never easy.

Part of the reason the original GB was so funny is that the comedy is often very subtle. Any remake better take that into consideration and not focus on slapstick or cartoon comedy.

I've seen most of those films.

But GB was a key film of my childhood. He and the other actors will always be the Ghostbusters to me -- beyond any other role.

I loved him in Stripes and Ghostbusters. I am going to have to watch these other movies now. I didn't even realise he was on some of these.

Rest in peace Ramis. You will always be Egon Spengler to me.

He wasn't in all of those movies Mr friendly guy, but he did write the script for all of them. A great genius.......

I remembered this Ghostbuster 3 fan trailer that was made that highlighted him in some of the other films as he aged...... it was kinda shocking to realise just how many epic comedy movies the Ghostbusters stars starred in.....

Also, was it sad that the first thought that came to my mind was that Ghostbusters 3/4 would never come to be?
Also,I wander if Bill Murray will catch any extra flack from Ghostbusters fans in light of this? IIRC his disinterest has been one of the major things holding up a third movie all these years.
The problem with Ghostbusters 3 is not just that Murray didn't want to do another comedy slapstick movie. After Ghostbusters the game, Murray pointed out that there was just serious problems with a script and the role of Winston was still token black dude.

Certainly the delay in the 90s was due to Murray branching out into serious movies but given just how Dan vision of Ghostbusters as semi-serious stuff......

I kinda loved the comedy from the Ghostbusters game, city insurance and damage, how Ghostbusting was becoming a commercial franchise......... but if that script was what was going to be in for a 3rd movie, I'm not sure how it would sell.
