Hobby Lobby fires employee for being pregnant

Post by General Zod »

Good thing they're pro life!
According to a report from RH Reality Check, the company may have fired a pregnant employee after she requested time off to give birth to her child, even after reassuring her that her job would be waiting for her when she was ready to come back.

“They didn’t even want me to come back after having my baby, to provide for it,” Felicia Allen told reporter Sofia Resinick. Allen started as a part-time cashier at Hobby Lobby in 2010, and found out she was pregnant not too long after she started. She said she asked her supervisor if her job would be safe even though she hadn’t been working at the chain long enough to qualify for the Family Medical Leave Act.

“I asked her would I lose my job due to me being four months and only having five months before I have my child. She told me ‘no,’” Allen told RH Reality Check. “I felt like everything was OK. I had talked to my boss, and she let me know that everything would be OK. I would still have my job.”

When Allen was ready to have her child, she was fired. She said she tried to come back three weeks after she gave birth, but wasn’t rehired like she was assured she would be. “I was like, I can’t get fired,” Allen said. “She can’t terminate me because I have to go have my child. I started asking everybody on the job, ‘Can they do this?’ And even the assistant manager who had just got hired [said,] ‘No, that’s not right.’”
In addition to being misled about being able to return to her job, Allen said Hobby Lobby fought her on unemployment benefits. According to Allen, the company said she could have taken personal leave but opted not to. Allen eventually won her claim, but she left her experience at Hobby Lobby feeling that the company had discriminated against her because of her pregnancy.

I miss something. What's SCOTUS got to do with Hobby Lobby being an asshole 4 years ago?

What this thing shows is that all the talk of Hobby Lobby and its supposedly deep religious beliefs is total fucking bullshit and nothing else.

Corporations already enjoy lots of advantages that normal people don't and have no valid claim on religious beliefs. No matter what some fuckwits like Scalia, Alito and Roberts happen to say.

I'm more interested in what Hobby Lobby says, not what their lawyers said in a case where they practically had an ethical duty to throw anything at the wall that would stick. So being aware of that, what's SCOTUS got to do with a four year old story?

I think it's more to do with SCOTUS letting these pricks more off the leash, given that they have a history of treating their employees like absolute shit as per the above example, yet are granted even more room to discriminate based on the bullshit principle of 'religious freedom'. So it's about them being given more freedom, despite having a bad rep with employees.
Yeah, I've always taken the subtext of the Birther movement to be, "The rules don't count here! This is different! HE'S BLACK! BLACK, I SAY! ARE YOU ALL BLIND!?

Problem was she didn't qualify for medical leave since she hadn't been working there long enough, and it seems all she had was a verbal assurance that there was no problem. Should've had it in writing so that she could sue the fuck out of them for breaking a written contract. Total dick move, but when all you've got is a verbal agreement with your boss you're going to lose every time.

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either. :P
