That was in Iraq. It has been all over the news here in New Mexico for the past week (more or less) because the two people that died from New Mexico were in that crash.

"We don't do bodycounts" is what the US said, apparently. They did it in Afghanistan, and it didn't work out very well. And let's not forget the Vietnam farce.

A further clarification on American casualties. Combat losses so far have been 95 killed in combat, plus 12 in accidents. Wounded in combat number 343, while another 56 have been hurt in accidents. Ten soldiers are missing and seven POWs. Thus total combat related casualties are 455 in 23 days of action. That's about 20 a day, or about seven per division per day.

The amount of casualties is actually similar to Desert Storm, at least in raw numbers:

U.S. casualties: 148 battle deaths, 145 nonbattle deaths

Army: 98 battle; 105 nonbattle
Navy 6 battle; 8 nonbattle
Marines: 24 battle; 26 nonbattle
Air Force: 20 battle; 6 nonbattle
Women killed, 15

U.S. wounded in action: 467.

However, in terms of aircraft the amount of losses is clearly not similar- this undoubtedly is because Iraq's AD network could never be completely rebuilt after 1991, and the US advancements in technology since then, combined with the fact that the Iraqi AD network was never that good anyway.

Coalition Aircraft Losses: 75 (63 U.S., 12 Allied)

Fixed wing, 37 combat, 15 noncombat
U.S. losses, 28 combat, 12 noncombat
No U.S. losses in air-to-air engagements
Helicopters, 23 (all U.S.): 5 combat, 18 noncombat

I should add that any US figures on Iraqi casualties should be taken with a massive grain of salt- reports of destroyed vehicles in GW1, for example, were outrageous. In addition, we've seen the same in this one- take the totally unconfirmed claim of 3,000 dead Iraqi defenders in Baghdad.
