Muslim Woman Harassed on Subway by 3 Men Who Call Her 'Terrorist,' Chant Trump's Name: NYPD
'It breaks my heart,' the victim wrote

A Muslim woman wearing a religious headscarf was harassed on the subway by three men who allegedly called her a terrorist and chanted "Donald Trump" to her, police say. 
Police are searching for those men, who allegedly targeted the Long Island woman on the 23rd Street subway station serving the 6 line at about 10 p.m. Thursday.

The suspect walked up to the woman, who was wearing a hijab, and began chanting, "Donald Trump! Donald Trump! F****** terrorist, get out of this country, you don't belong here," according to police. 

The men got on the northbound 6 train with the woman when it pulled into the station, and the woman moved to the back of the train, police said. The men eventually moved toward her, again yelling "terrorist, get out of this country." 
One of the men grabbed the woman's bag, breaking one of the straps, police said.
The woman told police she responded to the men, "What the f*** do you want?" and moved away again. When she got off the train at Grand Central, the men yelled after her, "Get the f****** hijab off your head!," according to police.

The woman reported the incident to police at Grand Central. She told them the men, who were white, appeared intoxicated. There was no other immediate description of the suspects, and police are canvassing for surveillance video. 
In a Facebook post late Friday night, the victim spoke out about the attack.

"It breaks my heart that so many individuals chose to be bystanders while watching me get harassed (sic) verbally and physically by these disgusting pigs," she wrote.
The NYPD said last week that bias incidents in New York City have spiked 400 percent in the two weeks since Trump was elected president compared to the same period last year. NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill, however, stopped short of saying that Trump's victory played a role in what he described as a troubling trend. 
Demonstrators outraged over the recent attacks gathered in Jackson Heights Friday night, calling it a "hate-free zone." 
"We're horrified by the incident in and of itself," Afaf Nasher of the Council on American Islamic Relations said of the subway harassment of the Muslim woman. "Anyone going through some kind of attack is absolutely unacceptable. But then you feel this overwhelming empathy because we know that this is not the only person who has been assaulted in mass transit, but also on streets." 
There are "swastikas showing up, people who are dressed wearing religious garb being targeted," said Nasher. "We're seeing it on every level from young kids in school to adults in the streets."

A Brooklyn man has been charged with a hate crime, accused of threatening a Muslim off-duty officer and her son.
Sources tell NY1 that at about 6 p.m. Saturday, Officer Aml Elsokary said she saw 36-year-old Christopher Nelson yelling and pushing her son on Ridge Boulevard and 67th Street in Bay Ridge.
Police say when people nearby tried to intervene, Nelson accused the woman of being part of the Islamic State and threatened to slit her throat.
Sources say he also told her to "go back to your country." They say he then ran off.
According to sources, she was wearing a hijab at the time and did not identify herself as an off-duty police officer.
In 2014, Mayor Bill de Blasio recognized Elsokary as a hero after she rushed into a burning building to save an elderly woman and a baby.
Nelson was charged with menacing as a hate crime and aggravated harassment.

Well, first of all, hate crimes have an impact larger than their singular victim. They are terrorism-lite. They create a climate of fear and intimidation. That is why the KKK burned crosses in people's yards and hung people from trees. They did it to terrorize the black population, even if the number of actual lynchings and cross-burnings was, as I suspect you would put it, "statistically irrelevant".

With Trump's campaign and election, that shit is becoming more common, and yes, lots of them seem to think they have some sort of tacit permission. You can tell because they invoke the name of Donald Trump when they do that shit now.

For the record I've not exactly been following the news and when I visited a national news organization's internet presence (NBCnews.com) I literally saw these 2 incidents in a sea of stories about the Trump cabinet and the subway threats victim was treated to chanting of Trump's name. Muslim college student who claimed Trump supporters attacked her on the subway under arrest for making story up

She made it all up — and now she’s under arrest.

The Muslim college student who claimed she was harassed on the subway by three men who shouted “Donald Trump,” called her a terrorist and tried to rip her hijab off her head has admitted to detectives that she concocted the entire story, the Daily News has learned.

Yasmin Seweid, 18, has been charged with filing a false report, a police source said.

Seweid had numerous opportunities to admit the incident never happened but again and again stood by her story, the source said.

On Wednesday, after again being confronted with questions from detectives increasingly suspicious of her story she recanted and said she made it all up, citing family problems.

The police source said criminally charging her was appropriate.

“This isn’t something we normally like to do but she had numerous opportunities to admit nothing happened and she kept sticking by her story,” the source said.

“We dedicated a lot of resources to this — and don’t get me wrong, this is what we do — but we had guys going back and forth, looking for video and witnesses. And we couldn’t find anything.

“Nothing happened — and there was no victim.”

It wasn’t immediately clear what Seweid hoped to gain by lying to police.

The Baruch College student claimed that on her way home to Long Island the night of Dec. 1 she encountered three drunken men on an uptown No. 6 train.

She said straphangers stood by and did nothing while the trio mocked her and tried to tear the religious garb from her head.

“It made me really sad after when I thought about it,” she said. “People were looking at me and looking at what was happening and no one said a thing. They just looked away.”

She provided police a description of the suspects, one of whom police believed they saw on video following her when she got off the subway at Grand Central Station to look for police. At the same time, there were inconsistencies in her story.

For awhile, police believed those to be nothing more than typical of someone traumatized, but detectives could not find witnesses or any significant video.

Then, last week, she left home and was reported missing on Thursday — only to turn up safe and sound Friday.

That, sources said, increased the suspicions surrounding her tale.

And now people are that much more likely to dismiss the next report out of hand. Nice work, Yasmin.

It's amazing how few people understand that, especially given how long news shows have been talking about hate crimes as a topic. When was the last time you heard a "journalist" on a national TV program point out the reasons that hate crimes have a greater impact?

Those inclined would have dismissed any and all reports out of hand anyway. Still not cool to make shit up, but I don't think it's going to move the needle or change the fact that anti-Muslim sentiment is on the rise.
