Dylann Roof sentenced to death

A jury in South Carolina has sentenced Dylann Roof to death for killing nine black church members at a Bible study meeting in 2015.

Roof, 22, an avowed white supremacist, was found guilty in December on all federal charges in the shooting deaths of nine black parishioners on June 17 at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The shooting, where Roof had waited for members of a Bible study group to close their eyes in prayer before opening fire, sent shockwaves across the United States.

Jurors deliberated on the penalty for less than three hours.

Roof stared straight ahead as the judge read through the jury's verdict findings before announcing his death sentence, local media reported.

Roof represented himself for the penalty phase and was unrepentant during his closing argument earlier in the day, telling jurors he did not have a mental illness.

He told jurors he still felt the massacre was something he had to do and did not ask that his life be spared.

Roof told FBI agents he wanted to bring back segregation or perhaps start a race war with the slayings.

"Today's sentencing decision means that this case will not be over for a very long time," lawyers who represented Roof for the trial phase said in a statement after the verdict.

Roof still faces a trial on murder charges in state court, where prosecutors also are seeking the death penalty.

The jury found Roof guilty on all 33 federal counts against him including nine counts of hate crime resulting in death, three counts of hate crime involving an attempt to kill and nine counts of obstruction of exercise of religion resulting in death.

On the one hand I rarely want to give a criminal what they want. Roof wants to die for his insane little crusade. On the other hand I am not opposed to such a piece of shit who can easily continue to be a danger to others. I'm not against the death penalty on people where there is no doubt they did it, if there is any doubt in a case there should be no execution. This case has no real doubt.

But but, to not defend or direct any sympathy towards Roof, he isn't exactly a normal killer. I think the dude is crazy, like literally straight jacket crazy. I worry because this crime was so heinous we are allowing a mentally ill person to essentially have assisted suicide. Not saying he should get off or even not be executed but how this case was tried with Roof being allowed to represent himself, the speed of the trial, the fact there wasn't a better review of his psyche to determine whether he was just an asshole or a crazy asshole has me concerned. I mean Roof's treatment by the public and the justice system has been a bit less justice filled then I'd like with him being allowed to be assaulted in prison and people applauding it, even helping pay for him to get out of jail. The guy who assaulted Roof is no hero, him being allowed to be assaulted was not justice.

I'm not exactly an advocate of the death penalty, but you do understand there is a difference between right and wrong, and between judicial actions and random ones, right? Or are you saying that...
