Hatred of the French
I hesitate to ask, but why do so many of you detest the French?

i don't hate the French. I don't like the French government, and i am angry that a self described ally would allow rampant anti-Americanism and anti -Semitism to flourish. The kicker for me is that a quarter of France (source: Le Monde/TF1) actually wants a murderous dictator's regime to defeat the US and UK alliance.

I would suggest that some people have merely jumped on the band-wagon and bash france because it is a popular thing to do and dare I say caused by a little puffed-up pride.NecronLord wrote:I hesitate to ask, but why do so many of you detest the French?

I think it's because of the French extremists who did some outrageous things during last two weeks.

I'm English so it's only natural after fighting them 400 years or so.
That and of the few times I've been to that country I've never met anyone really nice like other foreigners such as American, Canadians, Chinese, Germans etc.
Their arrogance gets to me as well, even my dad who was a Francophile a few years back can't see why he liked them like he used to.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but a lot of us don't give a fuck where you're from or what you look like or even how you think the world should be run.
Basically, I hate a person who is either STUPID or EVIL. I don't have the time or need to pile them all up into racial and religious and political groups.

The French (gov't and jingoists) attack America for things like power, arrogance, influence, 'domination', etc-- but in reality they would replace American "dominance" with their own form in a heartbeat if they could, so I find their position to be hypocritical.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

Of course they would. They're socialists. Which means they believe that everyone should be socialist, too, dammit. (heh) So one of two things should happen.Coyote wrote:The French (gov't and jingoists) attack America for things like power, arrogance, influence, 'domination', etc-- but in reality they would replace American "dominance" with their own form in a heartbeat if they could, so I find their position to be hypocritical.
1. The US should lose the power that they have so that they're eye-level with France, or
2. France should have someone fund their military development so that they can be a superpower like the US.
...It's all about equality.

Actually, Chirac, in France is considered a conservative. Imagine a socialist nutcase like Lionel Jospin running things! eek!Nathan F wrote:Exactly.Kelly Antilles wrote:Actually, most French aren't that bad. It's the socialists in Paris that are overly zealous and make everyone else look bad.
With leadership like Chirac, what do you expect?
On a side note, my Grandfather has a timeshare on the Island of St. Martin. he goes once or twice a year. (for those who don't know, half of the Island is controlled by France and Half is controlled by The Netherlands.) Anyway, the French side of the Island was so empty it looked evacuated! The Dutch side? packed! Hmmmm, i wonder why.

Actually, it's because the Dutch side of Sint Maarten (as the locals spell it) is the is the touristy side, and the French side has the airport. The French side is sort of the native residential side; it's like the part of Puerto Rico that the tourist never sees because it's ugly. I just got back from spring break on Sint Maarten. So that makes me a leading authority.Col. Crackpot wrote:Actually, Chirac, in France is considered a conservative. IMHO, it goes back to the relationships between DeG, FDR, and Churchill during the war.I hesitate to ask, but why do so many of you detest the French?
FDR cordially despised DeGaulle and thought he was a would-be tinpot dictator with delusions of grandeur. DeGaulle resented the ensuing loss of French power and glory during and after the war, even as he resented what he derisively called Anglo-Saxon hegemony. Churchill was caught in the middle between the two and lamented that of all the crosses he had to bear, the heaviest one was the Cross of Lorraine.
Some say that France's initial veto of the UK's entry into the common market was motivated by his dislike of England and the English that carried over from the war than by any logical reasoning.
By the same token, France's withdrawal from NATO's military structure during the 1960's was partially motivated by the Gaullist dislike of the US.
Anyway, that's my opinion.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

What does Franklin Delano Roosevelt have to do with anything? Again all of that was 40+ years ago. Why do modern Americans complain about the french so much?

Careful, kid. My wife is French. So is her family. Are you suggesting they have poor behaviour, or that they are obnoxious or obstructionist or unsupportive, simply because they are French?Stormbringer wrote:Simple as a culture and nation they're faithless allies and thankless friends; they're obnoxious and obstructionist with out being constructive at all, and they have incredibley poor behaviour.NecronLord wrote:I hesitate to ask, but why do so many of you detest the French?
I wonder how many French people those who cross the line between 'making fun' and 'declaring hatred' know personally, anyway, or if they get their opinion about the French from CNN and American history books.

Excuse me, but the NAACP was founded as a civil rights group, and civil rights are CONSTANTLY relevant. African-Americans don't bear a grudge against white people. The NAACP is there to deal with CURRENT race issues, not the unsettled injuries of a time long passed.Kelly Antilles wrote:Because humans hold grudges for millenia. Look at the NAACP, for example.
