Senator Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat and a sharp critic of big banks and unregulated capitalism, entered the 2020 race for president on Monday, becoming the first major candidate in what is likely to be a long and crowded primary marked by ideological and generational divisions in a Democratic Party desperate to beat President Trump.

In an email to supporters on New Year's Eve - 13 months before the first votes will be cast in the Iowa caucuses - Ms. Warren said she was forming an exploratory committee, which allows her to raise money and fill staff positions before a formal kickoff of her presidential bid.

Well, I'm definitely against a Sanders campaign now, because it would mean him and Warren campaigning of the same progressive base, potentially splitting it and ensuring a centrist wins. Warren is actually a decent choice to unite the party, I think, and I like her on economic policy and standing up to Trump. Not sure about her foreign policy views, or if she has the charisma and energy to match Trump on the campaign trail.

Also, its not my call, obviously, but maybe time to start a 2020 megathread or something? Because I expect we'll be hearing a LOT of these announcements over the next month or two, and its only going to get more intense from there.

It never really ends. Even when there's no "official" election season underway, parties and politicians are always jockeying for position. Always.

And I'm going to go against the mainstream view and say that there's nothing inherently wrong with that. It can become a problem, when it distracts from/conflicts with their duty to their country. But these issues matter, always and everyday, and who is in power, who has the advantage, will affect how those issues are addressed, or not addressed. The Republicans and their ilk won't take a day off from trying to ram fascism down our throats, so we can't take a break either.

But politics to me isn't something you box away into certain times and places. Its something that happens every moment, everywhere. Everything is political, because politics is at its root simply any process by which humans weigh and argue and address various issues in society. Politics no more stops than breathing does. Its a natural and inevitable part of the human condition.

Smart money is Joe Biden, actually, Which, yeah he's an old white man, but you can do much worse as far as old white men go.

And yeah, I know you can get worse than Donald. There are actual, avoid, we want to gas all the Jews Neo-Nazis under the Republican banner.

Edit: As far as how I'll vote: its basically nothing I haven't said before, but unless they are blatantly running to establish dictatorship, slavery, genocide, or global war, or are a convicted mass murderer or pedophile, I will pretty much vote for anyone who gets the Dem nomination, be it Warren, Sanders, Biden, or someone else entirely. Heck, if Bob the Hobo from the town of Buttfuck Nowhere gets the nom, he has my vote. And I'd regard anyone who doesn't do the same as a Quisling. Because that's where we are.

Fight it out all you want in the primaries. But when the general comes around, suck it up and vote Dem, or you are as accountable for what follows as the guys holding Tiki torches.

Eh, its hard for me to get worked up about plagarism when there's an actual fascist on the field. Maybe its just me, but I know we're never going to get a perfect candidate, because there's no such thing as a perfect human. What I want to know is: are they less hostile to basic American institutions, are they less hostile to anyone who isn't a rich white man, are they less likely to drive us into WWIII or a civil war, and can they beat the Orange Fucktard.

I'm not asking for perfect, Rom. I just want decent. You know, someone like Jimmy Carter, who openly admitted his flaws as a human being, and still tried to do right by us. That kind of person.

That would be a great start. Problem is the only ones I can think in Washington who are like that are all either unelectable(Warren, Harris, RBG) or need seasoning, and will then be unelectable (Alexandria Oscasio-Cortez).

I can't speculate as to whether AOC will be electable or running once she's eligeable, but if the current trend continues, by then we'll have enough people to have a proper socialist caucus in Congress. That is a good thing.

Hopefully doesn't count as thread necromancy, but Warren has now officially opened her campaign for President. Campaigning today in Iowa, she speculated that "By the tie we get to 2020, Donald Trump may not even be president. In fact, he may not even be a free person."
