'AOC TMZ': why Republicans obsess over Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Some on the right say it’s wrong for Trump and his followers to fixate on the young New York Democrat. Others are convinced she’s electoral poison

“It’s weird,” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez mused on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers earlier this month. “Why are so many grown men just obsessed with this, like, 29-year-old?”

Obsessed would seem to be the right word for conservatives regarding the progressive, provocative Democratic congresswoman from New York who is known as AOC.

Barely a speech went by at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference near Washington without a jaundiced reference to Ocasio-Cortez. There was even a cardboard cut-out of her next to a “Socialism Bread Line” at one of the event’s after-parties.

At Donald Trump’s rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this week, Donald Trump Jr described Ocasio-Cortez’s rise to prominence as “pretty scary”. The crowd chanted “AOC sucks!” with the kind of gusto usually reserved for another Democratic woman and Trump bete noire, Hillary Clinton, in the form of “Lock her up!”

Ocasio-Cortez is also the subject of a Republican attack ad in North Carolina’s third congressional district. Michelle Nix, a Republican, warned Ocasio-Cortez’s proposed Green New Deal would be bad for the locals.

“She has the media,” Nix said. “She has the followers. But bless her heart, she has some terrible ideas.”

Trump always needs a foil and she’s a very useful foil for him to say, ‘I’m running against radical socialists’
Charlie Sykes
In short, just as supporters have lionised AOC as the new face of the progressive movement, so the right has demonised her as the new face of socialism, a successor to Barack Obama, Clinton and Nancy Pelosi as the bogeyman or woman to rally the conservative base.

A recent Time magazine profile argued: “Wonder Woman of the left, Wicked Witch of the right. Ocasio-Cortez has become the second most talked-about politician in America, after the president of the United States.”

Time’s cover photo was a vivid sign of how quickly a phenomenon has formed. Charlie Sykes, a conservative commentator, said: “She looks like Evita. She’s obviously an exciting and charismatic figure, but I’m not sure she represents the direction that Democrats want to take in 2020.

“Republicans would love to make her the face the Democratic party. It’s from the Trump playbook: they would love to characterise the Democrats as this young, radical socialist from New York. To some extent, the Democrats are playing into their hands by elevating her. Instead of talking about members of Congress such as Abigail Spanberger and Conor Lamb in swing districts, we’re talking about AOC.”

Sykes, editor-in-chief at the Bulwark, added: “Trump always needs a foil and she’s a very useful foil for him to say: ‘I’m running against radical socialists.’ That’s exactly the way you’d build it up in the Trump White House.”

Ocasio-Cortez has duly emerged as an unwitting star of Fox News, the Rupert Murdoch-owned cable network where opinion hosts have shown devout support for Trump and a close relationship with the White House. When Trump gave a phone interview to close confidante Sean Hannity this week, his criticisms of the Green New Deal were accompanied by footage of Ocasio-Cortez, who has championed the proposal.

According to research for the Guardian by Media Matters for America, a not-for-profit that monitors coverage, Fox News mentioned – or played clips mentioning – Ocasio-Cortez 299 times over the past two weeks.

The freshman congresswoman has complained that the network “has turned into ‘AOC TMZ’”, referring to the celebrity gossip website. Hannity has described her as “the new leader of the Democratic party” who pushes “bizarre, far-left radical ideas”.

This is a millennial female minority, the three things the Fox News audience seem to fear the most
Kurt Bardella
A Fox News spokesperson pointed to coverage in which hosts and anchors have invited the congresswoman on their shows and referred to her as “impressive”. In January she was interviewed as part of a report on healthcare reform.

The New York Post, also owned by Murdoch, recently published 24 articles about Ocasio-Cortez on its website in the space of six days, according to Vanity Fair.

Kurt Bardella, a former spokesperson and senior adviser for Republicans on the House oversight committee and ex-spokesperson for rightwing Breitbart News, said: “I think they’re looking for someone now that Hillary Clinton is gone from the day to day public eye.

“Here is someone who has become the most visible figure in Congress in a short space of time. She is bombastic. This is a millennial female minority, the three things the Fox News audience seem to fear the most. Whether it’s the travel ban or border emergency, she embodies the things that scare them.”

With 3.7m followers on Twitter, Instagram fame and several viral video clips, the youngest congresswoman ever elected has bigger name recognition than many Democrats running for president. She is therefore a more prized target.

Bardella, who has an article about Ocasio-Cortez pinned on his Twitter page, added: “We’re going to hear her name on the campaign trail as much if not more than the Democratic candidates. In their over-zealousness, Republicans are only serving to make her a more impactful and significant figure. I bet you AOC’s name ID on Fox News is absurdly high.”

Progressives believe the demonisation of Ocasio-Cortez is doomed to fail.

Neil Sroka, communications director for Democracy for America, said: “They are obsessed with AOC because she scares the hell out of them. She has electrified Democrats in a way we haven’t seen since Obama. There’s no doubt that’s part of the reason they’re going directly after her.

“She’s a young Latina woman advocating a sharp change in the policy trajectory of the country, and that’s horrifying for them. It’s everything they’re scared of. They think it will work for them in the long term and they can make her Nancy Pelosi II, but they’re going to lose that battle.

“They are only making AOC stronger. They have never had to confront someone who is committed to putting forward a bold agenda and doesn’t care about the criticism.”
It's an interesting thing to note, as she, or their public of her, is the villain in their minds, and take everything she says under a microscope. Most recently, they've been hounding her for her comments about Amazon's possible tax rebate for building their new headquarters in New York City.

Amazon blow up shows AOC an economic illiterate

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t get that Amazon’s $3 billion incentives were tax breaks, not a cash handout.
The left complains that conservatives are “obsessing” over Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Well, there is a reason for that: Ocasio-Cortez is driving the agenda of today’s Democratic Party — and her economic illiteracy is dangerous.

Case in point: Ocasio-Cortez celebrated the recent tanking of a deal negotiated by her fellow Democrats in which Amazon promised to build a new headquarters in Long Island City, N.Y., right next to her congressional district. Amazon’s departure cost the city between 25,000 and 40,000 new jobs. Forget the tech workers whom Amazon would have employed. Gone are all the unionized construction jobs to build the headquarters, as well as thousands of jobs created by all the small businesses — restaurants, bodegas, dry cleaners and food carts — that were preparing to open or expand to serve Amazon employees. They are devastated by Amazon’s withdrawal.

Recommended Video
Ocasio-Cortez was not disturbed at all. “We were subsidizing those jobs,” she said. “Frankly, if we were willing to give away $3 billion for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district, ourselves, if we wanted to. We could hire out more teachers. We can fix our subways. We can put a lot of people to work for that amount of money if we wanted to.”

No, you can’t. Ocasio-Cortez does not seem to realize that New York does not have $3 billion in cash sitting around waiting to be spent on her socialist dreams. The subsidies to Amazon were tax incentives, not cash payouts. It is Amazon’s money, which New York agreed to make tax-exempt, so the company would invest it in building its new headquarters, hiring new workers and generating tens of billions in new tax revenue.

As New York Mayor Bill de Blasio explained, the Amazon deal would have produced “$27 billion in new tax revenue to fuel priorities from transit to affordable housing — a nine-fold return on the taxes the city and state were prepared to forgo to win the headquarters.” Unlike Ocasio-Cortez’s imaginary $3 billion slush fund, that is real money that actually could have been used to hire teachers, fix subways and put people to work. With Amazon leaving New York, that $27 billion leaves with it. Genius.

Ocasio-Cortez does not seem to understand that by helping to drive Amazon away, she did not save New York $3 billion; she cost New York $27 billion. There is a difference between having bad ideas and not grasping basic facts. Reasonable people can disagree about whether New York should have offered Amazon $3 billion in tax incentives — or anything at all — to build its headquarters in the city. But that is different from not understanding that New York is not writing a $3 billion check to Amazon.

Sadly, Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t learn from her mistakes. She made the same kind of error in December when she tweeted “$21 TRILLION of Pentagon financial transactions ‘could not be traced, documented, or explained.’ $21T in Pentagon accounting errors. Medicare for All costs ~$32T. That means 66% of Medicare for All could have been funded already by the Pentagon.”

But, as Pentagon spokesman Christopher Sherwood told the Washington Post, “DoD hasn’t received $21 trillion in (nominal) appropriated funding across the entirety of American history.” Once again, Ocasio-Cortez did not grasp that the Pentagon did not have a magic pile of $21 trillion in cash sitting in a vault somewhere.

Her economic illiteracy matters because she is the principal author of the Green New Deal, which has been endorsed by most of the leading Democratic candidates for president. From this unschooled mind has sprung the most ambitious plan for government intervention in the economy since Vladimir Ilyich Lenin’s train pulled into Petrograd’s Finland Station.

If Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t understand how tax subsidies work, how can she be trusted to plan the federal takeover of the health care, energy and transportation sectors of our economy? Think she and her allies have any idea how to, as her now infamous talking points put it, upgrade or replace “every building in America” … or replace “every combustible-engine vehicle” … or connect every corner of America with high-speed rail … or replace all fossil-fuel energy with alternative energy sources — all in 10 years’ time? Apparently, they think we just have to find all the magic pots of cash the government is hiding.

Amazon left New York because Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow democratic socialists created a hostile environment in the city. And if Ocasio-Cortez has her way, Democrats are going to do to the rest of America what they just did to New York.
In their minds, she's the ignorant college girl who is going to destroy America with her good intentions, and doesn't know what she's talking about.

So, how on the money(if at all) are they about her connections to reality regarding American policy? Why do they continually attack her? What does this mean for the Republicans? What does this mean for the Democrats?

Discuss.

In her mind, she's a woman, a minority, and a liberal, and therefore untermensch. Everything else, any debate of ideas, is secondary to that.

She's also a convenient person to point to to scream "SEE? The Democrats are SOCIALIST!"

Representative Ocasio-Cortez has a bigger problem than what republicans think of her:
Isabel Vincent for the New York Post wrote:Amid her zeal to save the world with the Green New Deal, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has ignored residents in her own Bronx back yard.

“I thought AOC would be our savior, but that’s not the case,” complained Roxanne Delgado, a local activist who said she has tried for months to get in touch with the congresswoman for help saving an animal shelter and to clean up parks in the district.

Delgado, 40, says she has made numerous calls to Ocasio-Cortez’s offices in Washington and Queens and sent a barrage of tweets after the freshman lawmaker encouraged residents during a recent visit to a Bronx public library to hit her up on social media.

But she’s heard nothing back.

“NO email or contact on @AOC’s page except DC number which has full #voicemail and no one picks up,” Delgado tweeted on Monday.

The Post made several calls to both the Washington and Queens offices last week. The same recording at both numbers gives Ocasio-Cortez’s website and doesn’t allow callers to leave a message.

The website includes a “scheduling request” form that visitors can fill out to ask for a meeting.

Another Bronx constituent told a community gathering last month that they needed Ocasio-Cortez for a sitdown with post office officials to sort out difficulties he was having with mail delivery.

“I want AOC or a representative from AOC to be there,” Anthony Vitaliano, a former cop and Community Board 11 member, said at a Feb. 28 board meeting.

Vitaliano, 78, also wants Ocasio-Cortez to pressure Amtrak to clean up graffiti at property it owns on Tremont Avenue.

“You know, I appreciate what she’s doing, but she has to represent us,” he told the board gathering, where other elected officials — from the city and state but not AOC’s office — sent staffers.

Vitaliano told The Post: “She has to address these local issues. Her district is everywhere else in the US. Her heart is not in the Bronx.”

By contrast, he said, residents’ needs received much more attention under Rep. Joe Crowley, whom Ocasio-Cortez unseated in a surprise primary upset last year.

The longtime congressman’s Bronx district representative, Thomas Messina, regularly attended community board meetings, according to Vitaliano.

“Tommy cared about us,” Vitaliano said.

Although Ocasio-Cortez tweeted about improving mail service in the Bronx this month, Vitaliano said he was still experiencing problems and waiting for her office to arrange a meeting with post office management.

And although a Bronx community rep for Ocasio-Cortez visited the graffiti site, nothing has happened, he said.

Meanwhile, Delgado noted the animal shelter site was spared — thanks to help from the City Council and the mayor’s office.

Making access all the more challenging for her constituents, Ocasio-Cortez has yet to open an office in the Bronx.

A rep for her told a Bronx community board meeting in January that the congresswoman was having difficulty finding space.

“If you have any leads, please send them our way,” said Naureen Akhter, a deputy district director for Ocasio-Cortez’s office.
Good luck on not getting primaried if your constituent services really do suck.

This seems to be a common issue with District based representation. You can have a representative that spends a lot of time on local issues but is a non entity on national issues, or you can have someone who is very active on the national stage ( or in a parliamentary system, perhaps a cabinet minister) but consequently neglect constituency services or does a poor job of delegating it. Can't always have a rep. That's adept at balancing both...

That said though, shouldn't stuff like cleaning up graffiti be the state reps or municipal reps job and not the national reps, who should rightly be more concerned with national level issues...

That’s exactly why there are multiple tiers of government rather than just one. “Clean up park” and “save the animal shelter” are not national issues and ought to be left to municipal representatives.

That being said for optics reasons (and because a lot of voters probably don’t know / care about the difference) she should have a system set up for a response, even if it’s no more than “I’m sorry I can’t help you with this issue, you need to talk to your local councillor”.

The republicans all ways go step all over any woman who comes into politics. They can't stand women in the work place. Its one of their most deeply held prejudices. See what jobs they give republican women, its always go look after the kids while they do every thing they can to ignore the kids. It's weird, the claim the moral high ground on family issue's but the men absolutely will not involve them selves with kid matters, but when it comes to control of the female body the men decide every thing.
They are weird, but it makes sense when you remember they are religious zealots trying to over throw a constitutional democracy and install a theocracy.

I'm semi-convinced she's trolling the Republicans kind of Trump style. Seeing if she can generate some AOC Derangement Syndrome. :D

It seems to be working to some degree.

Personally, I'm at the point where I mostly dismiss her and avoid hearing whatever batshit thing she's currently saying. Kind of like I have to do with much of what Trump says. If she gets some actual legislation passed or comes up with some realistic plans on how to accomplish some of the stuff that she dreams of doing, then I'll listen to her.

One thing to take into consideration is that the source article is the NY Post, which is a Murdoch property and is basically Fox News: The Print Version. The NY Post is definitely not a reliable source, so I would take it with a grain of salt. Though, to be fair, I did just try to call Ocasio-Cortez's office, and as the article says it goes straight to a recorded message (doesn't even ring) and then directs you to the website, with no option to leave a voicemail. I'm not an expert, but from my admittedly limited experiences calling my local representative and senator in North Carolina this is very unusual. I have always been able to at least leave a voicemail, if not speak to a staffer. The article also makes the good point that she doesn't have an office in the Bronx; the 14th district is rather oddly split between non-contiguous slices of the Bronx and Queens, and it's actually very cumbersome to get from that part of the Bronx to that part of Queens if you wanted to go to your representative's office.

So I think Ocasio-Cortez probably could be doing a better job. But, I'm guessing that she has simply spread herself thin logistically and doesn't really have the resources or experience to efficiently staff multiple offices.

It does seem like a common enough tactic to try to bring down a particularly irksome representative on the national stage by trying to bring up how they are neglecting their local issues in the process (to varying degrees of truthfullness, of course)

I would imagine that her office would get swamped by angry calls from the usual racist and sexist Republicans (or Republicans for short) who would delight in taking up her staff's time. So an electronic interface makes a lot of sense.

AOC is almost superstar level known even outside the US. I think the amount of calls and attention she gets, outpaces anything others in her position get.

Okay, probably not. I'd give what she has to say a read though. It's faster and less annoying.

At this point she's just annoying either for her own crap or having to hear "AOC said...." from the people who hate her.

Oh, and they're now going after her boyfriend as well. ‘Mean’ meme mocks what Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s boyfriend looks like
The new Netflix documentary Take Down the House offers a behind the scenes look at Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-N.Y.) historic run for the House of Representatives. But it’s a glimpse of her partner that many viewers are currently fixated on.

The documentary is the first time viewers really get an inside look at Ocasio-Cortez and Riley Roberts’ otherwise private relationship. For some, it’s the first time they have ever seen Ocasio-Cortez’s partner. And his appearance shocked one viewer who called Roberts a “bin raccoon” in a self-described “mean tweet” that quickly went viral and got the meme treatment–with many flipping the script and parodying it.

“Apologies for the blatantly mean tweet but THIS is what AOC’s boyfriend looks like? incredible scenes, truly representing all the ambitious and stunning millennial women shackled to boyfriends who look like bin raccoons out there,” people on Twitter wrote, each one providing their own take of what Ocasio-Cortez’s boyfriend “looks” like...
What he actually looks like:

Now I have to admit that if my girlfriend had been elected to Congress and I was being interviewed about it on-camera I would have made more of an effort to dress smart, unless the film crew specifically asked me to dress how I normally do, but this is astonishingly petty.

Although Ms Occasio-Cortez's response to this is hilarious: Apparently they were planning to escape to the woods and become lumberjacks if it all went wrong.
There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.

The guy has a long history of showing up to meetings and rallies advocating unfucking the United States in several different ways, over and above probably covering the rent and utilities all by himself when his partner's had to take time off work to campaign for Congress, so I think that earns him at least some credit towards not being a stereotypical techbro. Even if he does look almost exactly how you'd expect a guy who works as a web development consultant specialising in digital marketing and user-experience optimisation for start-ups to look.

Oh come off it, dickhead. He’s a fucking flannel-wearing hipster gentrifier regardless of his activist status. And I’ve known more than enough of those socialist activists in real life to know the categories are not mutually exclusive.

I live in a gentrifying city, and when those guys sign a lease in a neighborhood you can bet that the artisan coffee shops, web designers who commute on skateboards for some fucking reason, and bank account condos for up and coming foreign national criminals are right behind.
I had a Bill Maher quote here. But fuck him for his white privelegy "joke".

Don't hate the players, hate the game. Or rather, don't hate the professionals who bring disposable income into a neighbourhood only to have most of it hoovered up by price-gouging landlords before they can spend it locally, hate the system that says you can jack up rents by however much you feel like whenever you feel like.

I don’t hate him. I think he looks like a douchebag, and that his likely 2-mile per 18-24 months creep into the poor areas of Brooklyn and/or the Bronx has had more impact on the lives of poor Americans than literally every meeting and protest he has ever gone to.

How is mocking a politician's spouse's appearance or your assumptions about their career and finances relevant or appropriate?

Really the more insulting bit is the fact that the tweet used the term "shakled" to describe the relationship. Especially when you look up who on Twitter actually made the original tweet. (E.g. obviously not a right wing conservative)
I do know how to spell
AniThyng is merely the name I gave to what became my favourite Baldur's Gate II mage character :P

Same way it’s appropriate to mock literally anyone. Notice the lack of any statement regarding AOC in relation to my mockery of her boyfriend? That’s because if she wants to be in a relationship with an apparent douchebag, it should have no bearing on my opinion of her.

Shaming people for their appearance without a good reason is neither cool nor progressive. What about that article makes him an 'apparent douchebag?'
