Facebook bans Farrakham, Alex Jones, Yiannopolous, and others for hate speech and violence.

Post by The Romulan Republic »

https://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/face ... -1.5120557
Facebook has banned Louis Farrakhan, Alex Jones and others from its main service and from Instagram, saying they violated the company's ban against hate and violence.

The company said Thursday that it has also banned far-right figures Paul Nehlen, Milo Yiannopoulos, Paul Joseph Watson and Laura Loomer, along with Jones' site, Infowars.

The latest bans apply to Facebook, Instagram and extend to fan pages and other related accounts. Facebook previously suspended Jones from its flagship service temporarily; this suspension is now permanent and includes Instagram.

Facebook says the newly banned accounts violated its policy against dangerous individuals and organizations. The company says it has "always banned" people or groups that proclaim a violent or hateful mission or are engaged in acts of hate or violence, regardless of political ideology.

For years, social media companies have been under pressure from civil rights groups to clamp down on hate speech on their services.

Following the deadly white nationalist protests in Charlottesville, S.C., in 2017, Google, Facebook and PayPal began banishing groups and individuals who identified as or supported white supremacists.

A year later, widespread bans of Jones and Infowars reflected a more aggressive enforcement of policies against hate speech. But Facebook instituted only a 30-day suspension.

It is not clear what events led to Thursday's announcement. In a statement, Facebook merely said the "process for evaluating potential violators is extensive and it is what led us to our decision to remove these accounts today."

The social media giant has been under heavy pressure to rid its service of hate and content expressing extreme views. Last month, it extended its ban on hate speech to prohibit the promotion and support of white nationalism and white separatism. It had previously allowed such material even though it has long banned white supremacists.

Jones reacted angrily Thursday during a live stream of his show on his Infowars website.

"They didn't just ban me. They just defamed us. Why did Zuckerberg even do this?" Jones said, referring to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Jones called himself a victim of "racketeering" by "cartels."

"There's a new world now, man, where they're banning everybody and then they tell Congress nobody is getting banned," he said.

Watson, meanwhile, tweeted that he was not given a reason and that he "broke none of their rules."

"Hopefully, other prominent conservatives will speak out about me being banned, knowing that they are next if we don't pressure the Trump administration to take action," he wrote.

Asked to comment on the bans, Yiannopoulos emailed only, "You're next."

Farrakhan, Nehlen and Loomer did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press for comment.
Good. I grudgingly respect the right of fascists not to be arrested for being fascists (although I think that US incitement of violence laws are too loose). But no private individual or company is obliged by the Constitution to give their views a platform.

Of course, the Alt. Reich will scream about "persecution", because like everything else, freedom of association, deregulation of business, and free enterprise are things they only believe in for their side.

Edit: They've now also expanded their definition of "hate speech" to include white separatism/nationalism. To which my response is "It didn't before? Wow, Facebook sucks even more Right wing dick than I thought."

Of course, if they really want to be consistent about banning white supremacy/white nationalism, violence, and hate speech, they should also ban Donald Trump.

Well the right wing believe in free markets, so they can create their own company and compete with Facebook. Just be sure to not be hypocrites and not ban left wingers who are critical of them....Oh wait who am I kidding?

Checked back into Facebook for the first time in a while, and saw that they'd expanded the options you could give for why you were reporting a post to be far more comprehensive.

Hopefully they keep going in this direction.

The biggest problem with Facebook has always been people have to report the crap. (It's just to large to do it otherwise).

Meaning, someone has to be offended enough to report it.

Case in point - There is a memorial page for a former pornographic model on Facebook I stumbled across. The woman in question died in 2003 in a car accident.

There are STILL assholes writing stuff on that memorial, and none of it complementary. Really crappy jokes like "Looks like you finally out grew your training bra". All by old guys that look like they should be hanging out in the 'too stupid for this show' section of Duck Dynasty.

Problem is, all those asshole posters, their profiles are private. Reporting that one post will get it removed. Reporting them as assholes, good luck gathering proof.

Their friends probably find it all hilarious.
I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.

It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.

Given the repeated scandals with violations of privacy (pulling text messages off your phone) and security (storing passwords in plaintext), how many of you trust Facebook to define and apply a policy of acceptable conduct?

Considering it's their own service, I trust them to apply one that they find acceptable.

The question is, will people agree with Facebook, or leave?

I've made a shit ton of Facebook reports over the years, and they have always been ignored. Including some pretty brazen and explicit stuff inciting political violence.

So no, the problem is not just people being unwilling to report. Its a problem of tolerating it which Facebook needs to continue to work to address.

There is a difference between Tolerance, and lack of man power to deal with everything.

So, my question for you is, did you follow up on any of your reports?

Because, if you didn't, quite frankly, the fact you reported so many, might have gotten you identified as a spammer or a nut-job.

Case in point, Religious Zealouts often spam out lots of complaints about people activities to whatever authority they can, usually without follow up (as their righteous indignation has been satisfied, and they block of the offending content so as to not be reminded), until they are either told to stop, or just marked as 'auto ignore'.

I got notifications from Facebook (which I understand to be standard when you make a report) saying that the things I reported did not violate their community standards. Not sometimes. All the time. I'm not sure what else I can do to follow up on it, other than writing a letter of complaint to their customer service people or something. And if I did that for every dodgy thing I see on Facebook, it would be a full-time job.

There are a few alternatives. I think Minds is supposed to be a Facebook alternative. I've never looked at it though. I'm on Facebook to interact with family and other people I know who I can't be bothered to call, write or email. :)

So far the main alternatives I've heard about Minds, Gab, Bitchute are mostly going with the "if you aren't breaking any US law, otherwise free speach" as the main basis for their TOS. Whether they'd stick with that if they were as big as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and what people were posting was potentially costing them money? I tend to think not.

Realistically, there probably isn't much you can do then.

People are post variations of the "first they came.." poem. For those who don't know about this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came_...
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
They did this with Alex Jones and now for Paul Joseph Watson. Disclaimer, I find some of Watson's videos amusing, but some of his videos on soy seems to be inaccurate, not to mention Infowars sells soy based products.

So that's right folks, they came for Paul Joseph Watson and I did nothing, for I was not Paul Joseph Watson. Ok, let me put a more accurate representation of the events.

First they came for the purveyors for porn, and I did not speak out, because porn folks ain't going to help fight the damn SJWs. Plus Logic Man Ben Shapiro doesn't watch porn. *

They they came for Amos Yee, and I did not speak out - because I believe in the contest of ideas and I couldn't possibly demolish the pro paedophilia stance Yee adopted.**

Then they came for Paul Joseph Watson and then I spoke out, goddamn it. Because Watson hates those SJWs. :D

* no free speech warriors care when Youtube disallows porn on its TOS. And Ben Shapiro claims he doesn't watch porn. No seriously.

** no free speech warriors gave a shit when Amos Yee was deplatformed. Contest of ideas and all that. And no I am not a hypocrite, I don't care if social media companies ban him for breaking their TOS. And Yee is a douchebag.

Now I haven't heard of Loomer, so rational wiki has a few links on her.
