So I was visiting the girlfriend today at her school, and a strange thing happened. We were in the dining hall, satisfying the rumblies in our tumblies, when I felt the need to relieve myself. So I got up and headed for the john. As I was walking across the dining hall, I happened to notice a "report" on CNN that said something along the lines of "Rumors abound of a boot camp for children in Iraq." (I love news reports that use words like "rumor.") I shook my head in disgust, both at the lack of factual news, and at the concept of having a boot camp for children. It reminded me of those images from Japan during WWII. But I digress...

There was this lady sitting at a table watching the same program on TV. I had slowed up enough to watch the program, and she caught my eye as the reporter finished wallowing in the spotlight. She turned to me, and with a dead straight face uttered the most ludicrous words I had ever heard from any pro-war advocate. "I wish there were a boot camp around here that I could send MY kid to," she said. "He's just ITCHING to kill those rag-heads."

There are boot camps in the US. They are sort of an alternative to 'juvenile hall' for underage criminals. You aren't trained to kill and such, but, you do go through boot camp.

The gist of it was that they are Saddam's equivalent of the Hitler Youth, and have been ordered to resist the coalition during the battle for Baghdad...I had difficulty believing the story, not because I think Saddam wouldn't do that, but because I can't see a group of 14-17 year-olds putting up any kind of effective resistance...

Well, a 14 year old kid is as capable of blowing a tank away with an RPG was a 22 year old- it's all a question of training. Luckily for the US/UK, the Iraqis are (by Western military standards) very ineffective soldiers with very ineffective weapons: e.g. in 1991, two out of three captured RPG-7s failed to detonate on impact. I doubt they've gotten better after 12 years.

Actually they're more then capable of it. You can join the US Army at 17 and the British Army at 16 BTW.
