Actually, speaking from experience the "sand bed" is fucking comfortable. You just have to make sure that you make it right so you don't get sand spilling down into your clothes.

That said, the most uncomfortable aspect of those sleeping arrangements is the fact that at any moment you could be rousted and shot at.

How long does the average soldier get to sleep during a war? I'm guessing that they're napping for no more than an hour or two.

While at first glance, one would feel bad about the sleeping arrangments. However, these guys (and girls) are probably so tired they could careless where they are actually sleeping. The sand beds look nice enough, though the mud puddles probably sucks the most. They will probably settle for sleep anywhere for the next week or so until exhustion sets in totally, and better conditions will/could be set up.

Soldiers love to sleep. They learn to knock themselves out in under a minute.

Speaking form experience, sleeping in the desert during the day sucks donkey balls. But when you're running at their tempo, any sleep is good sleep.

No, and it wouldn't make a difference anyway. Soldiers can't carry any additional gear and are unlikely to have the time to inflate one; they're lucky to get two to four hours at a time. Even tank crews often end with the driver sleeping in his seat, and the turret crew taking turns sleeping on the turret roof one at a time.

Sad things is these guys are actually lucky in, in many cases troops must sleep with there gas masks on because reaction times are very short in the case of an attack. By the time you could wake up and think to put it on, your dead.

I've dosed for maybe a couple hours with a gask mask on and it isn't particularly fun. At least in their case they aren't likely to be using the old MK5 but I still bet it helps to be really exhausted.

Hmm, should I go out side, set up my 2 man tent, and crawl in my military issue sleeping bag tonight? Or better yet, go get a couple tent halves from home and set one of those up...

I am considering it, just to be remided of the small things that we should be thankful for. Heck, with the service these guys are giving, they should be the ones sleeping on a comfortable bed, not I, that is, 'til I join the Air Force or ANG.

I've slept many an hour in my mask. I didn't find it too unconfortable. The problem is when you got a joker in your squad that sneaks up on you while you are sleeping and covers the air intake valves with his hand. Scares the piss out of you.(but it is funny watching the guy jerk awake)
