IMHO i think we (US/UK/AUS) may see warming relations with the overwhelmingly Shiite Iran soon... The Shiites in Iraq have taken a shine to us, and we did utterly vanquish Iran's greatest foe in a matter of weeks. Heck, even the supreme Ayotollah of Iraq thanked us! When was the last time an Ayotollah said 'America' in a sentence that didn't end in 'death to the great satan'?A Shiite Muslim leader told a group of 400 to 500 people, "The tyrant of the world is finished, thanks to the coalition. Thank God for Iraq the victorious."

While fighting continues in the city center and Saddam may yet live, if the people no longer fear the regime it is finished. Hopefully the shooting will stop soon so all looters can be diverted to Saddam’s palaces.

Caution, it is still not over, Bagdad isn't totally secured, and there is Tikrit. There are still a few days (weeks?) to go.Cpt_Frank wrote:Finally it's over.
Hopefully all those deaths won't have been in vain, and something good for the Iraqi people will come of their suffering.
The deaths haven't been in vain, we only need to look at the images of the chearing Iraqis today to see the end of their repression.

Peacenik1: Hey, there's this bad dude in Iraq named Saddam, who is like, really evil.Montcalm wrote:Maybe a dumb good old fashion hunger strike.The_Nice_Guy wrote:Well, they'll probably say that we could have arrived at the same result without a war via other means.
Though what those 'other means' were, they never bothered to tell us.

Peacenik2: Hey, we gotta do something about it.
Peacenik1: I know, which is why I called you here. I was thinking of organizing a mass hunger strike in San Francisco. We'll get the media on our side for publicity. We'll sit on the roads and force people to listen to us!
Peacenik2: Yeah, that's a great idea! That Saddam will probably be convinced of our sincerity and treat his people better after that!
The Crazed Guy
PS. This is a gross exaggeration, and simply for laughs. No pacifists were hurt in the writing of this satire.
PPS. Of course everybody, including peaceniks, know this would never work. Hey, nobody's that stupid!

I still fear that Iraq will end up with a US-approved dictatorship rather than a true democracy. Nonetheless it's clear that today world history was written.Warspite wrote:The deaths haven't been in vain, we only need to look at the images of the chearing Iraqis today to see the end of their repression.

Well, if some neocons in the administration, like Wolfowitz, have their way, the US should be trying it's damndest to install a democracy.
In fact, other than Iran, Iraq as a secular state for quite some time now, actually has a higher chance of making it than most other Middle East nations.

We ought to buy every drop of import oil we can from them, and pay a fair price for it. We toppled Hussein, but frankly, we still owe them for 1991. Not to mention, if we can cut off the fucking Saudis and that asshole Chavez in Venezuela, so much the better.

There is that danger, you're not alone on that, numerous persons have already voiced that worry, both from the West, as from the Middle East. Also, the UK and US have been on the record that they don't want any part in post-reconstruction. Bush said in Belfast: "Iraq is for the Iraqi people".Cpt_Frank wrote:I still fear that Iraq will end up with a US-approved dictatorship rather than a true democracy.
Their credibility is at stake... Although the US administration can piss on any past-claims, they can't afford alienating the Middle East countries, not after "stabilizing" the region with this operation.

The real key here was Saddam's pathetic resistance. Of course, it's hard to put up a good fight when you murdered all your top generals and anyone in your entire administration with a brain out of paranoia ...

Yet another page right out of Stalin's pagebook.
