In the AF's view they are ugly because they are sloooooow......and most jet jockeys are all about speed.
I think they are one of the greatest aircraft ever built, they absolutly reek of lethality with all thoes hardpoints and especially that big ole 30mm in the nose. It just says , "Goodmorning, I'm about to fuck up your world and not break a sweat while doing it"

Especially if the one up against it gets a whiff of the gattling gun.Nathan F wrote:It is as maneuverable as most fighters at low levels, and has the capability of carrying AA missiles.Montcalm wrote:Would an A-10 succeed in a dogfight
So, with a half decent pilot, yes, it could.

It's designed to be able to survive SAM hits...Captain Jack wrote:Can it survive a missile (sidewinder or equivalent) hit?

Remember it's designed role: tank-plinking and CASCaptain Jack wrote:Shit, that is impressive.Beowulf wrote:It's designed to be able to survive SAM hits...Captain Jack wrote:Can it survive a missile (sidewinder or equivalent) hit?

Actually it stands a very good chance, its lack of speed works in its favor as a speedy interceptors overtake forces eiether long range shots, or risk over shooting and suddenly being in range for a burst of 30mm anti-tank rounds which will shredd a fighter like it was made of tissue paper. Heat-seeker missiles also have a hard time as the 'Hog's' low pressure turbofans run very cool for a jet engine and the exahaust plume is blocked at its hottest as it passes between the low mount rear stabilizers(that boxed shaped tail is no design accident). Even a hit by something like a Sidewinder which uses a proximity warhead is unlikely to severly damage an A-10 as its skin was made to deflect small arms fire. Add in the fact that Hogs prefered altitude is 500' or lower and it can give even an F-16 a very hard time.Montcalm wrote:Would an A-10 succeed in a dogfight

Its prime mission was anti-tank work, which is the reason for the huge 30mm cannon mounted on the nose. When it first came into service NATO was still facing the spectre of a massive land war in central Europe. The Soviets had a 5:1 advantage in tanks and the A-10 was supposed to help even the odds by flying CAS and deep anti-tank raids in the Soviet staging areas. They built it so survivable because of the density of AAA that was in service at the time.Shinova wrote:So what exactly is a A-10 supposed to do?

Not to surprising as in open ground a helos worst nightmanre would be to get caught by an A-10. Its one of the few airvraft in American service that can fly slow, and turn hard enough enough to literaly chase a helicopter. A quick 20rnd burst from the 30mm would swiss cheese even a Hind-D.Macross wrote:I dont know if you would count this as a dogfight, but an A-10 did face off and shoot down an Iraqi helicopter in the first Gulf War.Montcalm wrote:Would an A-10 succeed in a dogfight

In reality, an air superiority fighter wouldn't bother getting into a dogfight with a Warthog- it'd maintain superior altitude, lock on with it's look-down-shoot-down radar, and snap off a missile. Or two.
Also, I don't know if the Thud II has the capability to aim it's 30mm at fast moving air targets efficiently- anyone know?

From all accounts I've heard on my end, the USAF was looking to replace the A-10 in the early 90's, but the Army really liked it as a CAS bird and was looking to take over the leftover A-10's, once the AF replaced them with upgrades. However, the A-10's did so well in Desert Storm that the AF decided to keep them and told the Army to go pound sand.Vympel wrote:In reality, an air superiority fighter wouldn't bother getting into a dogfight with a Warthog- it'd maintain superior altitude, lock on with it's look-down-shoot-down radar, and snap off a missile.
