Isreal in the EU?
UPI link
According to this article the Israli foreign minister has indicated to a EU delegation that Isreal is interested in joining the EU.
Some significant roadblocks would exist for Isreal, including settling all border disputes with neighboring countries (a requirement for new entries to the EU).
This is interesting, does this, combined with Sharon's agreement to follow the "roadmap to peace", which would create a Palastinian state within 3 years, indicate a major shift in how Isreal desires to be viewed internationally?
Would Isreal joining the EU help stabilize the middle east region, or create even more of an anti-western sentement?

I think Israel is ready to play ball with the peace plan. The people there are sick and tired of war and getting beefed in the ass by terrorists.
Israelis feel like calling the bluff of the Palestinians-- if the Pals agree to peace and get their state, then all will be well. But if the Pals refuse to make peace, even when the Israelis agree to everything, then the Palestinians will be revealed as liars who only want to destroy Israel and use 'peace' as a tool for sympathy.
I warily approve of the new Prime Minister for Palestinians, Abu Mazen. I hope he takes the deal-- and I hope the deak is a good one, and sincere for both sides. If so, both Israel and Palestine may apply for EU membership.

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

It doesn't stop them taking part in the European games, The European cup, various European club football cups and the Eurovision song contest so no I doubt it would prove to be much of a problem, though waving in anyone who is of the Jewish faith would probably conflict with EU immigration procedure I would have thought .Lord Sander wrote:Wouldn't the fact that Israel isn't even partially in Europe be a bit of a stumbling block towards it joining the EU?

It’s a broadcast membership club, AFIK there is some African counties in it also but there is a fee for attending the song contest.
It’s sort of like the World Series named after a newspaper?

Take a look at the list of participants http://www.esctoday.com/2003/participants.php it is 25 european countries plus Israel so my point about Israels inclusion within European events stands.

Anyway, yeah, that's bizarre. Israel shouldn't have anything to do with Europe, in any case.

Neither does Morocco, and it will join the E.U eventually. Have you seen the projections for the future? The Roman Empire was nothing compared to a fully grown E.U. We will have our own private sea once againLord Sander wrote:<off-topic>Woohoo! Russia's candidate is t.A.T.u!</off-topic>TheDarkling wrote:Nothing to do with Europe???

Sorry, I don't. I was thinking of maps I saw in newspapers a short time ago, on the ocasion of the joining of the new E.U members. Half of the newspaper was dedicated to the future of the E.U.Lord Sander wrote:Nope, can't say I have. Got links?Colonel Olrik wrote:Neither does Morocco, and it will join the E.U eventually. Plus several other European countries that didn't make to the competion this year because they performed so poorly last year in Tallinn...
Every country that participates the Eurovision song contest is listed on this map: http://www.esctoday.com/history/pick.php

If Israel undergoes a major change in the next two decades, I'd have no problems with their EU membership, although this is a major "if".

The problem with EU expansion is that once we have all of Europe (excluding Russia and possibly Belarus) in about 15 -20 years we really have no where else to expand to, the middle east is a pit of fundie behaviour (also why the US isn't wanted as a member ) and the north of Africa has this to a lesser degree not to mention being economic disasters but then again they aren't that far behind Turkey in both areas and we are letting them in (maybe... possibly.... could do).
Bah. Screw that.Colonel Olrik wrote:You'll have to abolish the death penalty first.Andrew J. wrote:What's next? Is America going to join the EU?
And you're gonna have to change the name if you're taking in countries on the African continent, pal.

I wouldn't want Israel to join the EU.
They have a whole lot of issues to settle first. And given the current EU's pro-palestine stance, this will have to include a satisfactory end to that conflict for both sides.
I'd guess Turkey would get in ways before Israel...

Yeah the US could beat us individually however by the end of it the US would be taking orders from Burma, having a few 100 nukes chucked at you will do that to a countries relative power (of course that is just the UK and France), the EU combined - come off it not even the US is that powerful (without a nuclear exchange in which case see previous).HemlockGrey wrote:Of course, the United States could singlehandedly defeat the lot of you while retaining its soveriengty in the bargain, so I'm not very impressed.Neither does Morocco, and it will join the E.U eventually. As for the sovereignty issue, I'm sure Hawaii regrets joining the US, instead of going its lonesome and enjoying its "freedom".
