As with Patriot, the Justice Department is trying to gain outrageous new powers by packaging them with useful and ncessary changes to the law. It's an old but effective trick, though it's telling that the chairman of the judiciary committee, a Republican, has basically said in politician-speak that Ashcroft is full of shit.
Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.--Ada Louise Huxtable, "Farewell to Penn Station", New York Times editorial, 30 October 1963

Remember that story(dunno if it was true) about how Washington's soldiers offered to crown him King of America, but he turned it down?
Well, let us be thankful Asscroft lives in this day and age, 'cause if he didn't, all hail King John I...
The death penalty provision would allow for executions in cases where a terrorist caused "massive loss of life" by attacking a military base, nuclear plant or energy plant, the Justice Department said.
In addition, federal suspects in gun, drug and organized crime cases "where public safety is a concern" automatically are held indefinitely when they are arrested, Ashcroft said. "It seems as though the crime of terrorism should have the same presumption," he said.
HOLY BEJESUS. this nman is insane. First off once again attacking a military base is NOT TERRORISM regardless of how many times this dumbass thinks it is.
ohh yes drugs are a public safety issue. More like a public control issue. And holding people indefinitely without trial, that is a little something called UNFUCKINGCONSTITUTIONAL.
I swear Ascroft is a Facist.

Why would attacking a military base not be terrorism? It certainly ould not be for crime because there is very little money to be had...
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!

Terrorism involves going out of your way to attack civilians and similar targets.Coyote wrote:Why would attacking a military base not be terrorism? It certainly ould not be for crime because there is very little money to be had...
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Ahh, yes, good point. Attacking a military base would be more akin to Guerrilla Warfare, a la VietCong or some such.Hamel wrote:Terrorism involves going out of your way to attack civilians and similar targets.Coyote wrote:Why would attacking a military base not be terrorism? Terrorism is just an unconventional military act, and differentiating between unconventional military acts due to their targets -which is not the original meaning of terrorism, rather, by that, we'd be doing it based on the style of warfare (does it induce "terror" - how do we define terror?) being waged - is a ridiculous method of defining something.Hamel wrote: Terrorism involves going out of your way to attack civilians and similar targets.

Afterall that arguement's been bandied about several times. Particularly in case of any force that can't win in a set piece battle. Not to mention, under his definition, would Japan be guilty of a terrorist action? Rather then a formal act of war in Dec. 1941?

Tis a good thing there is a sunset clause in Patriot, or I would be asking if a Sith Lord is controlling the congress.

If they're a) guerillas and b) not on our side (for a given value of "our side"), they're terrorists. The Duchess of Zeon wrote:Terrorism is just an unconventional military act, and differentiating between unconventional military acts due to their targets -which is not the original meaning of terrorism, rather, by that, we'd be doing it based on the style of warfare (does it induce "terror" - how do we define terror?) being waged - is a ridiculous method of defining something.Hamel wrote: Terrorism involves going out of your way to attack civilians and similar targets.
