TS - stop electing that former Klansman to office then

Funny isn't it, when a REPUBLICAN former Klansman, EG David Duke,
possibly reaches elected office, the media shits itself and runs around in
a frenzy, but when it's a DEMOCRAT former Klansman, EG Senator Byrd,
the silence is deafening to say the least...

The analogy isn't exactly fair; Robert Byrd seems to have changed his ways, while David Duke is every bit the racist he was back in his Klansmen days, he's just more tactful about it. Although you do have a point; Robert Byrd got off with little more than a slap on the wrist when he used the term "white nigger" about two years ago.

David Duke was reviled by all mainstream Republicans.
Republicans were campaining for his Democratic rival!
He was only a Republican because the Republicans couldn't through him out of the party!
Trent Lott was drummed out of the senate. Could the demos due the same?

Bird Brain Byrd should be gone the same way Trent not a Lott of brains is gone.
I am not a big one on giving ANY politition a second chance. Like police, I want people with clean records, as credibility is an important thing.

There are too many people that want the job, that ARE clean, to let second chancer/raters have the job.

The comparison is still poor. Robert Byrd does not run these days on a segregationist, racialist platform; David Duke does, therefore he receives more criticism. It is quite true that the media tends to be much easier on democrats when they fudge up on racial matters and offend someone, but Byrd hardly compares to David Duke, still.

The whole Trent Lott thing was pure retardation. He gave a walking cadaver a compliment on his birthday and got crucified for it.
It would never have gone the way it did except that his enemies in the GOP (including the president) took the opportunity to cut him down and hang him out to dry.

And in my opinion, there is nothing terribly wrong with second chances or moving away from a political position that is incorrect. Abraham Lincoln, for example, was quite racist (not by the standards of his day, but by modern standards he would be extremely racist), but he eventually realized that he had been wrong and changed during the last years of his Presidency.

Exactly, Jesse Helms was the first southern Senator to hire a black staffer for chrissakes.

But naturally, if a conservative does anything like that it's only a cover, while if a Democrat happened to enjoy lynching in his youth, well, that's in the past :x

You're missing the point about David Duke.
He is a Republican, because he says he is, and the bylaws of the Republican party won't let them kick him out. He is campained AGAINST by the Republican party. When was the last time the Democrats said, "Hey this guy who calls himself a Democrat is a loony asshole, don't believe him, and vote for the other side please."?
Hmmmmmm.

You're missing the point about Byrd; he may be an ex-Klansmen, but he is no longer the racist that he was (at least not publically). There is nothing wrong with allowing people to change their views, although Robert Byrd certainly did something bad when he used the phrase "white niggers." But he got away with it, since he's a Democrat.

I think it's because KKK and the Republicans hate each other, and therefore seems odd.

Either way, I don't think the Klan endorses either of them.
