Sir, I protest and rise in defence of my native state! True, we may be a backward, half-assed, corrupt banana republic with Gov. Koko the Clown at the helm (that is, when he's not pursuing his hobby of studying law at university or can be found behind the duck blind when he's too bored to even pursue his part-time hobby of being governor), who can't even attract illegal waste-dumpers to set up shop here in America's Toxic Toilet. And we have this knack of failing to profit from our oil and gambling industries. And our schools may actually cause mental retardation even in kids who had three-digit IQs when they entered the system. And we may never know if the Insurance Commissioner we elect will finish a term in office outside the Federal prison system.
Sure, we might have a legislature who's members collect their paycheques from the oil and casino lobbies on the Floor as first order of business, but they're right there fighting for our holiest cultural legacy of cockfighting and trying to protect us from strange ideas like the seperation of church and state, the Heliocentric Theory of the Solar System, and evil-lushion. And while parts of the state may resemble a 13th-century theocracy, we've got New Orleans and... well, New Orleans. Sure, the Coastline's disappearing into the Gulf at the rate of a mile a year, but our Legislature has ensured that any Louisianian can have a "Choose Life" license plate and covenant marriage.
And as far as racism is concerned, I'll have you know that we here in Louisiana have been grappling with this problem for well over fifty years and I can proudly state that we have it relatively under control. Today, only ten parishes could be solidly counted on to elect David Duke governor, while there might now actually be two that would vote for a black man for the office.
So kindly do not compare us to havens of crackerdom like Alabama and Mississippi. Thank you.
