You'd think she would have learned from her last slip of the tongue. Of course, she's talking about a Hollywood Republican, and not the president, so I don't think anyone will care.

Wait. The last time they talked about politics, they got a nationwide boycott so bad they has to pose nude for a magazine, and now they dare make fun of Arnold?

I'd rather be governed by by a foreigner like Arnold who came to this country became successful and loves to be here for all its faults, than a stupid blonde cunt who grew up here, becomes successful and than badmouths every fault like its the end of the world

Otter,

You need to learn how to speak your mind, man. Stop holding back :) ;)

I'd second that motion, but I'm kinda partial to "Dixie Twits."

I want to be an equal-opportunity ball-buster; I don't want to deny some other has-been, chickenshit country music asshole their props. And it would be better if it rhymed, so I guess Travis Tritt is more deserving of the Twit thing.

How 'bout a compromise: Dixie Twats? That relates more to women and almost has the impact of "cunt," so we'd still be on the safe side of decency. (No need to go all-out on them. They can't help being stupid.)

I like Arnold, but this Dixie Chick bashing is just ridiculous. They're not saying anything more inflammatory than the things regular people say around the water cooler every day, and people are making them out to be raving idealogues.

What exactly have they done? Oh yeah, they made a couple of negative comments about public figures in the last year. Somebody please explain to me why this is a big deal.

Mike,

That's the difference. As water cooler comments, they're okay. When I tell someone how goofy I think George Bush is, even here, it's not as if I'm announcing as much to the mainstream. Tens of millions won't read or hear what I have to say.

The DC, however, aren't talking to a few people. They're not even limiting their opinion to the confines of a large site. Instead, given the opportunity, they simply spout off on television as if I, or anyone, should listen to them for who they are, not the validity of what's said.

I don't bash them because I really give a shit what they in particular say, and especially not because they're against the U.S. conservative grain. I bash them because they're one of so many: like other angst-filled, uneducated celebrities, they use name recognition, little else, to preach at us.

If they speak out against Clinton, Arnold, Karl Marx--it doesn't matter. They'd better bring more to the table than "I sold a million records" to avoid mockery.

Like I said, I'm an equal opportunity ball-buster :D

Interesting. Why do you blame them for this, and not the media, which eagerly follows celebrities around and laps up their droppings for public consumption, or the public itself, which is obsessed with celebrities?

Case in point: I would have no idea whatsoever that the Dixie Chicks had said this if somebody had not come running to the board to post it because it's such big news. Nor would I care.

A valid question:

I blame both, and partly myself for even listening to it. But I'd still say they're foremost at fault. Sure, the media is their megaphone, but it doesn't write the script for them (for once), nor does it compel them to say certain things.

Simply, they can choose to keep their mouths shut, talk about something else to the vulture-types, or go out on a limb and try and support their conclusions :)

It matters less to me than the time I've spent talking about it would indicate. It's just a pet peeve of mine. Having known some children, like the girls next door, who are very much hero-worshippers and would put stock in this sort of thing, I have a rather bad reaction to seeing it in print.

lots of people wrote: The Dixie Chicks have opinions!! Impale them with splintery 4 by 4s!!1!
It is a sad thing. I weep, WEEP I say, for the generations of children whose role-models will be forbiden to have opinions, lest they be forced into pornography by rioting legions of betrayed fans.

But seriously: what (stupid) logic are you following here? "If someone is popular, then they have an obligation to speak in places where the public might hear them of nothing except what made them popular, or items of trivial consequence."? I mean, it's fine to stop buying their music, but every time the Dixie Chicks say something political, Republicans start burning them in effigy.

Way to diagree with with what I say, but defend to the death my right to say it. Assholes.

Note: before anyone starts quivering with righteous indignation, I'll just point out that when I call someone an asshole, it's pretty much without malice; it's done in a friendly ribbing manner as in: hey dude, don't be a dick.

There's been some confusion on this point in the past.

Oh, come on. That's a blatant Straw Man.

They can have all the "opinions," even really stupid ones, they want.

But should they voice such things in the mainstream, I'll hold them to the same standards I would anyone else: when they say something controversial, they should back their shit up.

Why should I treat them any differently than anyone else in that regard? That they think they should be spared my ire on the basis of their "status" is compelling enough reason for me to bash them a little.

Alright, the porn joke has run its course...

Why weep for these "role-models"? Unless one wants to follow their example--that is, to grow up and be the shitty band du jour--they're nothing of the sort. I'm dismayed knowing that my neighbor's kids say they "look up" to the likes of a Britney Spears or Dixie Chicks.
But seriously: what (stupid) logic are you following here? "If someone is popular, then they have an obligation to speak in places where the public might hear them of nothing except what made them popular, or items of trivial consequence."?
I hope you're pulling my leg. You're calling my logic stupid, and yet you construct another Straw Man.

For a second time, paying special attention to the bold text:

...I'd still say they're [Dixie Pigs] foremost at fault. Sure, the media is their megaphone, but it doesn't write the script for them (for once), nor does it compel them to say certain things.

Simply, they can choose to keep their mouths shut, talk about something else to the vulture-types, OR go out on a limb and try and support their conclusions.

If they even attempted the latter, I wouldn't give them such a hard time. But they didn't.

If you want it to have the desired impact, eh...you're off to a good enough start I guess *shrugs*. I would separate "assholes" from the rest of what you said. Standing alone it might pack more of a punch, a'la the old rag header: BUY THIS MAGAZINE OR THE DOG DIES!

Of course, separating that would kill your irony, intentional or not: saying "assholes" right after paraphrasing Voltaire indicates that the Dixies' (or your own) opinion is sacred and defensible, but mine isn't, and I'm a jerk for picking at them :)

Jokes aside, when the DC even attempt to substantiate one of their off-the-cuff declarations, I'll...well, I won't bust as to run defend it, but I'll be there in spirit ;) 'Til then:

Adieu!

(See what I mean about the impact of a lonely word, dangling out there in the nothingness of space? It...eh, whoops. "Adieu" was supposed to be the last thing I said. Now I fucked it up. Oh well...you get the idea.)

You know, I wonder why they feel the need to shoot their mouths of every time they leave the country? It seems to me that they ought to stick by their statement or not make it in the first place.

Apparently you have some reading comprehension problems, because it was not Natalie that said anything this time but Emily Robinson. Emily is the Banjo player of the group, the tall, thin, brunette who is married to country singer Charlie Robinson.

I must say that I agree with DW on this about who cares what they (The Dixie Chicks) think or say? They were probably asked by the German paper what they thought of Arnold and she told the fucking truth, if you disagree with their opinion (as I do) then support Arnold around the water cooler. If you agree with them then waht are you complaining about? that your voice isn't as well heard around the world?

I think most people get upset at the Dixie Chicks for their comments because they are fairly liberal in a conservative business (Country Music), and that pisses people off.

That's fair, I think. I don't have a water cooler around which to bolster Arnold's rep (even if I could), unless one included the BBS as a virtual water cooler :)

Right. Criticism from that background might've been somewhat of a surprise to many country music fans--the same lot that booed ex-Pres. Clinton at a NASCAR race near my city in October of '92.

It's clear why I don't like their comments, but I feel silly talking about it at this point. Though I feel as if most of what I do everyday as largely pointless, this is the most clear-cut case of a wheel-spin I can imagine.
