Minnesota School Shooting

COLD SPRING, Minn. ? At least one person was shot Wednesday at Rocori High School (search) in central Minnesota, the Stearns County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

The victim was taken to St. Cloud hospital, said Deputy Rick Hondl.

Mike Austreng, the editor of the Cold Spring Record (search), said he saw one student airlifted from the school and another taken away by ambulance. He said it appeared no other airlifts were planned because authorities had removed landing markers.

"We can see groups of students being taken out of the building," Austreng said from the scene. "Most of them are running with their hands up in the air, or walking with their hands up in the air. They're being ushered away toward the elementary school."

Several news organizers were reporting that two students were shot during gym class (search) by a third student. The shooter was reportedly taken into custody. None of those facts were immediately confirmed by official sources.

"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

I sort of find it funny these things start happening with regularity when gun
control shit is up (the 1994 AWB is about to expire next year)

School shootings and other similar violence isn't unknown in the rest of the world.

Quite a few in Europe over the past decade, actually. It's just more easily criticized in American culture because of how much larger the US is than any individual EU nation. Just going from 1996, there have been in Europe:

Dunblane, March 1996: 18 killed by gunfire
Meissen, November 1999: 1 killed by knife after student accepted bet to kill teacher
Branneburg, March 2000: 1 or 2 killed (not sure if gunman died)
Freising, March 2002: 3 killed by gunfire, 1 by pipe bomb by expelled student
Erfurt, April 2002: 17 killed by gunfire
Total European death toll: 41 or 42 (average 6 per year)

That's compared to 37 deaths that I know of in the US during the same time period (there are probably more I don't know about). However, on a per capita basis, the school schooting rate (even after subtracting the one knife death in Meissen) is roughly the same between Europe and the USA.

EDIT____________--
I guess I should have said in the U.S. it gets More PUBLICITY, due to the fact we in the united states tend to be quite myopic in our view of the world at large. Especially our media. Our media makes it seem as if the U.S. is the first to experience ANYthing...

BBC says 17 killed at History of School Shootings. I should've linked first post.

Erfurt and Dunblane both were essentially the same scale as Columbine.

Well the BBC link is kinda incomplete unless what happened before the 1990s does`nt count for them....December 1989 Marc Lepine kills 14 girls at the University of Montreal`s Polytechnique.

I'm sorry if I seem apathetic, but it seems like these things only get reported if it happens in some town in the boonies. School related violence does happen, it's just that no one seems to care unless it happens in some sleepy hamlet in the midwest.

Since we are resorting to name calling, Jerk, I will refer you to Death from the sea's post. If that wasn't me tooing after the two posts before it...then...whatever.
as an aside, I suppose i should have typed Me tooer without the S, granted.

We had all those things at Schenley and they didn't stop anyone. They were all rediculously easy to get around and only served to punish students who violated the letter, but not the spirit of the law. One of my friends nearly got expelled because he brought a screwdriver to school for stage crew, thanks to those zero tolerence policies you are pushing, and he was a straight A student with no prior trouble and an outstanding record. Meanwhile, anyone who's serious about sneaking a weapon into the school can get around those secruity measures without a problem.

More like: the conservatives and christians will scream communist indoctrination, and put their children into home and private schools so they don't have to be around "those people". "VOUCHERS! VOUCHERS!"

I'm sure they'll just love you for having to lug around thirty pounds of titanium, steel and Kevlar all day long.

All of which will do jack shit to stop a student who wants to kill his classmates. They can simply start shooting outside, which has happened quite a few times. And if you think armed guards will take them down, they might, but not before the person empties there first magazine, which is as far as they generally, get. Course having a rent a cop open fire in an area crowded with kids is likely going to make things worse not better.

All you'd be doing is spending a vast amount of money, making people paranoid and at best greatly inconveniencing the student body.
