JAPAN IS DOOMED!

Post by Sea Skimmer »

With a mighty three-foot tsunami currently approaching the nations eastern coast! It cause was a fairy strong offshore earthquake, 7.1 if I heard CNN correctly. Looks like minor damage from the quake directly; one oil refinery with a moderate fire is all that's being reported. But clearly this WAVE OF DEATH will inflict far greater carnage.

Is Godzilla on his way also?

The earthquake was probably caused by his escape from his subterranean prison. Japan has angered the earth with its reckless industrial development once more.

And the US geological survey just reported to quake as 8.0. Very lucky for the Japanese it was about 60 miles offshore.

It's not the height of the wave that's the factor, it's the amount of force behind it.

Tsunami waves can be quite wide, and wash further onshore then you'd think, they'll threaten anyone on the beach anyway. I think the Japanese know what there doing; there's an alert out to the coast of Hokkaido. However what isn't clear is if its currently a three foot wave, which would indicate that it will get much bigger when it hits the coast, or if its lower and expected to peak at three feet.

There still don't seem to be any new sites with information up yet, but going off the TV reports the location has also been moved to within 30-40 miles of the coast of Hokkaido, so that wave ought to be hitting fairly soon.

Because it isn't just a three foot tsunami, it's a three foot WAVE OF DEATH. That can only mean that Tokyo is in danger once more from either Godzilla, an androgynous effeminate alien menace, or naughty tentacles.

Is three feet the measurment of the tsunami at sea, or the estimated wave height when it reaches shore?
Tsunamis that measure inches while out at sea can pile up to great heights when they reach shallow areas. This, if it's three feet NOW, really could be devastating!

Exactly, and the WAVE OF DEATH is now expected to be TWO meters high.

From what I was reading, they're including parts of Alaska in the tsunami warning.

[Lina]TSUNAMI!!!!!!!!![/Lina]

I think the Japanese will be fine. Maybe a little shaken up, but nothing more. Unless some loons stand in front of the wave as part of some weird cult decree, but otherwise, yeah.

And California's too far away to be hit, right?

I didn't see it listed on the advisory.

And meanwhile HAB armored super excavators throw up a massive seawall which easily repels the waves. This allows the armored battalions to destroy off Japan at there own pace.

Deep-water waves can grow to ten times their original size when they reach the shore. If this is a 2 metre deep-water wave, it could become a 60 foot wave when it hits the shore, and that's your notice to get in the car and drive to the high ground NOW.

Depending on where they are on the eastern coast, if the wave reaches 60 feet, they are fucked.

I withdraw my earlier joke now that I know how big the sucker could get and the damage it could do.

I sincerly hope everyone heads to high grounds. I seriously have a cousin that moved there and married someone

This seems to be the most recent news I can find on the Earthquakes and Tsunami

While it's certainly damaging, it seems that the measurement given is the size it's expected to be when it hits the shore, not the size it is currently.

Well, that's good news. A 1.3 metre shallow-water wave is only dangerous to the immediate coastal areas, whereas a 1.3 metre deep water wave is a mass-murderer about to strike.

So if I'm near the shore and a three-foot tsunami hits, what will happen to me? I mean, can't I just... hang onto a flagpole or something?
