They are terrorists now.

Post by TrailerParkJawa »

There was a second bombing of a company in the East Bay last Friday. The group responsible sent out a communique. Before, you could call them vandals and argue they were not terrorists, but now I think they crossed the line. The last pipe bomb was packed with nails. Nails are not needed if you want to do property damage. I hope they find these trash and put them away for good.

Warning of more Bay Area bombings
ANIMAL RIGHTS NOTE THREATENS FIRMS
By Dana Hull
Mercury News

The militant animal rights activists who claimed responsibility for
the bombings of two Bay Area businesses in a month have vowed in a defiant communique to double the size of the bombs they will use in future attacks.

Cars in company parking lots could be packed with explosives, they warn. Companies that do business with Huntingdon Life Sciences, a British firm that conducts animal testing, ``are considered legitimate targets'' of violence. Even family members of company workers shouldn't consider themselves safe.

``You never know when your house, your car even, might go boom,'' said the communique, which was posted on some animal rights Web sites four days after the attack on the Pleasanton offices of a health and beauty products company. Later, it stresses that ``we will be non-violent when the (sic) these people are non- violent to the animal nations.''

The note, taunting in tone, escalates the rhetoric from a little- known group that claims that it also planted two bombs at an Emeryville biotech firm in late August. The FBI's domestic terrorism squad is investigating both bombings, and a number of Bay Area companies that contract with Huntingdon are increasing security measures. Some have removed their addresses or names of employees from company Web sites, while others screen incoming calls.

``The last communique threatened violence, and this one promises it,'' said Steven Best, an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Texas-El Paso who studies radical politics.

Sent via e-mail to so-called ``above ground'' animal rights groups that regularly publicize such communiques, one of the groups then forwarded it to a Mercury News reporter late Monday evening.

It marks the second Bay Area bombing for which persons variously known as the Revolutionary Cells and/or the Animal Liberation Brigade have claimed responsibility.

On Friday, a bomb exploded at about 3:25 a.m. at the Pleasanton offices of Shaklee, which sells nutritional supplements and household products. No one was injured, but the explosion was so loud that five people called 911 to report the blast.

In late August, two pipe bombs detonated in the middle of the night at the Emeryville offices of Chiron, the nation's third-largest biotechnology firm. The Revolutionary Cells issued a similarly worded communique shortly after that attack.

``The same group has stepped forward to claim responsibility, but we do not know if the same people are involved,'' said special agent LaRae Quy, an FBI spokeswoman in San Francisco. ``The communiques are very similar, but we don't know if the exact same people are operationally responsible.

``It's very inflammatory and threatening language. We will not leave any lead uncovered. It's only a matter of time before someone is killed.''

Since early August, there has been a surge of arsons and vandalism in the name of saving the environment from suburban sprawl and gas-guzzling sport-utility vehicles, as well as a number of break-ins at laboratories and farms.

But the Bay Area's twin bombings are of increasing alarm to law enforcement officials and industry groups.

SHAC, or Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty has spearheaded a sustained campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences by harassing and targeting any company that contracts with it.

Shaklee is a subsidiary of Yamanouchi Consumer, a division of the Japanese pharmaceutical conglomerate. Yamanouchi has an office in Palo Alto. The ties between Shaklee, Chiron, Yamanouchi and Huntingdon are detailed on SHAC's Web site.

Many are searching for clues as to why there has been such a spike in activity.

``The public is just awakening to an ongoing scourge that many decent animal industry workers have suffered for nearly two decades,'' said Patti Strand, president of the National Animal Interest Alliance in Portland, Ore.

Strand, a Dalmatian breeder, is outraged that SHAC and other Web sites target corporate executives by listing their home addresses and phone numbers. She compares the various hit lists to anti-abortion extremists that targeted and at times killed doctors who performed abortions.

As in the previous communique, the author or authors made a point to describe the device that they claim was used. The technique appears intended to ensure that the activists receive credit from law enforcement for the bombing.

``We left an approximately 10lb ammonium nitrate bomb strapped with nails outside of Shaklee Inc., whose CEO is both the CEO for Shaklee and Yamanouchi Consumer Inc.,'' said the communique. ``We will now be doubling the size of every device we make. Today it is 10lbs, tomorrow 20 . . . until your buildings are nothing more than rubble.''

It goes on to threaten a Chiron executive and taunts, ``How are you sleeping?''

``This communique demonstrates that the radical anarchists have achieved power,'' said Gary Perlstein, a Portland State University criminologist who has tracked radical environmental and animal liberation groups for years. It ``shows that they are true political terrorists and not just misunderstood young people.''

Shaklee declined to comment about the communique Tuesday. A woman who answered the phone at Yamanouchi's Palo Alto office also declined to comment. A spokesman for the Hacienda Business Association, an association of tenants in the Pleasanton business park where Shaklee is located, said that the park's security force is on high alert.

Sounds to me like someone needs to be flung in some Tiger and Lion habitats so that these fuckers can be one with the animals they love so much. They should be labeled a terrorist group and sic Ashcroft and his cronies on them.

They have a picture of a van from the bomb in August evidently they (local police or FBI ) know who the van belongs to, they just cant find him. He is an activist from Oregon. Anyway, I hope they find them. I really do. It is interesting that both these bombings touched my life in minor ways.

I was suppose to interview for a job in the general vicinity of the first bombing and never heard from them. I think they were closed for the day.

A friend could not get to work on the day of the second bombing cause his building was closed. It is in the same business park. I saw the cops that day, of course the area was roped off for investigation.

And after a few days they find out that a single detonator can only touch off about 50 pounds of explosives, and then blow them selves up trying to rig multiples. The only building thats going to become rubble is there bomb making shack.

Uh... the cats in a person's house can be defined as nations by both their own self-importance, and the fights/wars they have...

But then again that isn't much of a wilderness...

Don't laugh. Tim McVeigh was able to assemble a very large fertilizer bomb, and it looks like these assholes have more people in their organization than Timmy did in his. This is serious shit.

Mike is right, this is serious. It is only a matter of time before one the pipe bombs kills or wounds a security guard, some guy working late, or a poor soul with insomnia going for midnight walk.

The frustrating thing, is these type of people dont really get it. You set off a bomb and disrupt the flow of life for the middle class and you will got gain any sympathy. Instead, folks will want you hunted down and shot or jailed.

Sounds like a plan to me. These are damn terrorists who have threatened the lives of American citizens. What makes them any better than those cowards hiding in the mountains of Afghanistan?

Which begs the question of why no one has done shit about these fuckers. Groups like ELF and ALF have been designated terrorists for years now and nothing has been done.

I guess it's because their cause is espoused by a lot of the green crowd; even if they abhor the methods. (And before any one jumps down my throat I was not saying every environmentalist is a bomb throwing wacko,)

Obviously, because they can't catch them. Don't you think the police would have arrested them if they could find them?

This group is not ELF (and who's ALF?). The worst ELF has ever done is brag about somebody torching an SUV somewhere. Lumping them all into a collective guilt is unreasonable.

I see it doesn't take long for the bullshit conspiracy theories to come out. Much more reasonable than simply thinking that the police haven't arrested them yet because they can't find them, eh?

Or what if they just plain mess up the timer on a bomb the size of McVeigh's and it goes off at the beginning of the work day? Or decide that Voluntary Human Extinction can be considered voluntary if a small terrorist cell makes the decision for the rest of us?

I thought about that too. What if they screw up a timer and it goes of in the day. The Hacienda business park where this was gets quite a bit of people in the day time. Also, there is a nearby shopping center that attracts families. So the chance of hurting children while remote, does exist.

It is hard to catch these people. They operate in small cells often without any knowledge of other groups.

I'm sure they would have. I'm wondering why though that the FBI, ATF and other such organizations haven't been brought in against these groups as is the standard practice for designated
This group is not ELF (and who's ALF?). The worst ELF has ever done is brag about somebody torching an SUV somewhere. Lumping them all into a collective guilt is unreasonable.
Actually, ELF has commited arson on at least dozen ocassions. They've burned developments, luxury homes and logging facilities. Given the sheer scale of the fires they've started it's only a matter of time before they do kill some one even accidentally.

ALF is the Animal Liberation Front. I believe it's a splinter group of ELF. Same MO only with out the inhibitions against killing people. They committed a few murders back in 1999 as well as went on an arson spree.
I see it doesn't take long for the bullshit conspiracy theories to come out. Much more reasonable than simply thinking that the police haven't arrested them yet because they can't find them, eh?
It's not a conspiracy theory to note that the usual host of three letter agencies haven't been brought in to deal with these groups as is the usual practice with domestic terrorist and speculate that popularity of the cause might have something to do with it. Certainly the extreme back to nature people have more support than skin heads and seperatist militias.
