Yellowstone heating up..

Post by kojikun »

I just heard on TechLive that some very unusual activity underground is causing Yellowstone's surface temperature to reach upwards of 200 degrees farenheit in some areas. Lets uh.. hope the shit doesn't blow up..

Hah, nothing will happen. Baloney to it, and if something does pop, well, it'll make my day more memorable.

And you find this strange? For crying out loud, Yellowstone is a fucking volcanic area with hot springs that can boil you alive and geysers that are very impressive.

It's usual that stuff get really hot in Yellowstone.

But they're reporting that weird stuff's going on in Yellowstone. And it's not the first time this has been reported.

They say there's a good chance a good portion of Yellowstone could explode and create ash rain all over the West.

If the caldera blows, say goodbye to tens of millions of people
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Say goodbye to a few billion. If the ash cloud is like past calderas, you get a huge drop in global temps and a mini ice-age that lasts for a fewscore years. Famine is a real bitch when you're in asia or Africa and the USA can't even feed itself.

The big trick is building them and begin to harvest before famine sets in.

Indeed they do, but unless we have them waiting, they're not going to do much good once the sky turns black and two meters of ash covers the main agricultural region of the USA along with all of its pacific ports.

Humanity would survive, but everything would change, and not for the better. I expect Australia or South Africa to take over in the new age of Man...

From what I remember, the ash rain won't be as bad as all of you describe.

The effects will basically be confined to the western United States, with some effects on the East. But in other parts of the world, life will go on as usual.

Course, the US will be somewhat screwed agriculturally for a while.

The main deposits would be quite severe in North America, but you have to remember that the volume of this eruption would be orders of magnitude greater than Krakatoa, which lowered global temperatures a few degrees.

Likely, we'd have another 'Year without summer' like in the early 1800s where it was snowing in georgia on the Fourth of July because of a volcanic eruption.

40,000 years ago a caldera erupted in Indonesia and 95% of our primitive ancestors died out, at a time when most humans lived in tropical/sub tropical regions.

I hope I'm wrong, but I fear I am not.

Yeah, it would be a lean year, but a crash program could probably start
producing food soon. Never underestimate America.

You read my mind, shep. I don't buy the america can;'t even feed itself jazz. We'd likely retreat to pre-1940's style isolationism until the catastrophe subsides, but the U.S should be able to hold it's own. That's purely speculative, but speculation is the fuel that's stoked the fires of humanity for many many years.

If Yellowstone Blows you'll see a drastic global i ncrease i n food prices. However, since the US is the wealthiest nation in the wolrd its l ikely that we'll be able to import more f ood then any other "needy" country. You can also expect to see trawlers out bringing in every last fishie that they can. Hell, we'll probably start harvesting artic krill, even though they taste like shit, just because they'll be cheap.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

We know certain eco systems would entirely collapse. Because of that we would milk certain ones already on the brink dry just to feed us in the short term.

And certain people I can name, *cough*Shakkara, Mellian...*cough* would be partying, celebrating the "explosive demise" of the USA or some screwed up thing like that.

If the explosion does turn out to be big, it's gonna be kinda dark out here in the West.

Of course, you London and Aussie people would have nothing to worry about. :P

See, this is exactly why we never threw out those Y2K supplies. Hopefully price gouging for 3 months-worth of food won't be too illegal. :)

The real pain of it is that the States hardest hit would be in the west and the Great Plains, and that's where most of our agriculture is. I have a feeling there would be famine and some government food-ration programs coming out, along with water shortages and at least temporary losses of infrastructure.

Everything within about 300-400 miles of Yellowstone would be a loss, but highways and train tracks could be cleared in a few weeks and powerlines can be rerouted out of the blast area. Air travel, though, would probably not be a major option with all the crap floating in the air.

And hey, when the skies finally clear, volcanic ash makes excellent soil for farming, so that's a bonus.

Na, you'll just be shot on sight by your local guard unit.

Bloody anti-hoarding laws. You'll get your come-upins when Y3K strikes!

London people wouldn't notice a thing even if Yellowstone was just outside London. It'd be just another bad day to them.
