That DHL flight that was hit by a MANPAD...

Post by phongn »

Apparently it lost all hydraulic controls and had to rely on engine power alone(!) to steer.

They really need a cooler name than "Manpad" for those things. It sounds like a hygine product!

I think MANPAD refers to the way in which shoulder-fired SAMs are deployed. The individual missiles have far cooler names like "stinger" and "red-eye"! I'll check FAS.

Sorry. MANPAD= Man Portable Air Defense. The shoulder-fired versions of short-range SAMS (like the stinger) as opposed to vehicle based systems like the Avenger or Linebacker.

This is a timely article. The San Jose Mercury News printed an article about how modern pilots in new aircraft are often very bored. Modern electronics have made flying planes reletively easy, until there is a problem. Then they need to rely on all their experience, trainining, and skills.

A Paris Match magazine freelance photographer was with the attackers and shot pictures of the missile launch and strike, which are in the Nov. 27 issue.
I don't know how to feel about this. On the one hand, yeah, I understand reporters must have some stance and position of neutrality to report the story. But on the other hand, what if the DHL was full of refugees or soldiers returning home? And even then, the crew are people too.

And if I had another hand.. yeah, of course.. french..

What comes to my mind is a comercial of an elderly man telling you how embarasing it is to be unable to control your colon/bladder and with MANPADS(tm) he can now live a normal life complete with tennis, hiking and horseback riding.
