While reading my international business textbook earlier, I had a few thoughts on Canada's healthcare, and figured I'd post them up. I read Mike's debate with Revprez a few weeks ago or whenever it was, and am following somewhat from that. Here's my questions:
1.) I've read a number of things which report that there are an increasing number of doctors that are coming to the US to work, because they can make lots more money here. Is this true? What can Canada do to fight this braindrain?
2.) During the debate (if you can call it that) between Mike and revprez, Mike pointed out the ridiculously high profit margin that exists in the pharmaceutical industry. I don't want to rehash that here, but is a high profit margin good for such an important industry that we need to constantly innovate and come out with new products? In other words, is it plausible to say that a decline in profits and incentives will reduce the amount of new products? (Not really talking about the bullshit products that are pretty much the same as we have now, I'm referring more to medicines that push the envelope of medicine.) I've read that a number of pharmaceutical companies have moved their operations to the US, no doubt because they can make more profits here. Is this a good thing?
Thoughts?
