Fat gains on tobacco as top health threat

Post by Mlenk »

Link
CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Inactive Americans are eating themselves to death at an alarming rate, their unhealthy habits fast approaching tobacco as the top underlying preventable cause of death, a government study found.

In 2000, poor diet including obesity and physical inactivity caused 400,000 U.S. deaths -- more than 16 percent of all deaths and the No. 2 killer. That compares with 435,000 for tobacco, or 18 percent, as the top underlying killer.
Too much super-sizing at McDonalds perhaps?

Maybe showing people eating fatty foods will earn R-ratings and be banned in public places.

You never know.

Im going to file a class action lawsuit Weird Al, were it not for his popular parody "Eat It". It was obviously part of a scheme funded byt he fast food companies to increase consumption of their quickly delivered low cost meals.

Or better yet I could TAKE A FUCKING WALK! you know MAYBE DO SOME FUCKING SIT UPS!

It's a shame so many people don't use common sense and take responsibility for their lives. A lot of the major causes of death (obesity, smoking, drunk driving, etc.) could be tied to a lack of personal responsiblity on the behalf of whoever was doing it.

That's not really fair. The vast majority of overweight Americans do accept responsibility for their own actions, which is why there are more than a hundred million of them and only a handful of these lawsuits.

The problem with obesity is not a refusal to accept personal responsibility, but rather, a failure of willpower and/or judgement (many overweight people are under-educated about dietary matters and commit mistakes such as believing that they can consume large quantities of "diet soft drinks" without penalty).

Yeah, and willpower is a major obstacle. The people who are skinny are the ones who have the willpower. Same goes for smoking, and other bad habits. Yes, they shouldn't have started eating bad foods, smoking, not exercising or whatever, but if a kid falls into a well, do we leave him there to try and climb out since he shouldn't have been playing around the well? It would be nice if exercise were as easy as sitting at my computer typing (Tugs collar nervously)

Or just favorable metabolisms.

I'm suddenly reminded of one of my aunts complaining about how much weight she had gained since she quit smoking.

I was referring to the people you see who are able to lose weight that is gained. For those fortunate enough to never worry about their eating habits due to awesome metabolism, good for them.

i rarely ever gain weight myself. i've weighed around a constant 120-135 for the past two years. and i assure you it's not through willpower. active metabolisms are a good thing sometimes.

Don't be too sure of your active metabolisms. Active metabolisms eventually slow down, which is how you end up with the rather pathetic sight of an older man who's got narrow shoulders, a sunken chest, a pencil-neck, skinny arms ... and a beer gut.

Also, a person can be skinny and still be headed for major health problems later in life due to inactivity and poor diet.

you know my brother had that too and recently he's started to get fairly chunky with no dramatic change in his diet or excercise routine. The toothpick is now a fat piggy. Y'aint gonna be young forever.

When people hear "sit-ups," they think of those pussy stomach-crunch things, not a genuine, fully-fledged sit-up where you can feel the fat burning off your torso. I did 50 of those on an incline at the gym this weekend and almost died. It's a lot different from doing it on a flat surface.
