It seems the abstinence-only people have found some converts in a African country stricken with the AIDS epidemic.

Zambia bans distribution of condoms in schools to prevent 'immorality'
LUSAKA (AFP) Mar 15, 2004

Zambia on Monday banned the distribution of condoms in schools, started as part of a drive to combat the country's alarming HIV/AIDS problem, saying it was promoting immorality and pre-marital sex.

Education Minister Andrew Mulenga said in a statement Monday that "the distribution of condoms to young boys and girls could, instead of protecting them from HIV/AIDS, encourage them to engage in premature sex," Mulenga said.

Zambia is one of the southern African countries badly affected by the disease with an estimated one in five adults believed to be HIV-positive.

Anti-AIDS activists and non-governmental organisations which had been distributing condoms to school pupils immediately denounced the move.

"We can't continue living in denial. We need to protect the young from this deadly disease," said Nkandu Luo, a former health minister turned AIDS activist.

This guy doesn't sound too well informed, especially for the dubious title of education minister. Yes, little boys and girls will engage in premature sex - one big "duh!" headed your way, fuckhead - however, by distributing condoms those little boys and girls will be safe from AIDS infection (as well as unwanted pregancies and other SIDs). Yes, I know it's not foolproof protection, but it's better than nothing. This guy's whole argument makes no sense.

At this point, it might not even matter. Run a search on the archive board for posts about AIDS made by The Duchess of Zeon for some blood chilling statistics about how bad the epidemic is in sub-Saharan Africa (short answer: it's going to make Europe during the Black Death look like a kindegarden class with a case of the sniffles going around )and what can be done about it (short answer: nothing).

Ironically, the best solution may well be to leave them alone, because we can't do anything to save them, and focus our resources on halting the pandemic in Russia, India, and China, but I'm guessing you came to your conclusion based less on a cold analysis of the evidence and more based on the fact you're an utterly amoral fuck who can't be bothered to care about half a billion people dying because they live far away and they dress funny.

Yes, the AIDS problem in Africa has spread to the point that trying to stop it with free condoms is rather like attempting to stop a 20000 acre forest fire with a fire extinguisher that hasn't been recharged since the Nixon administration. At this point, the money spent globally to fight AIDS ought to be shifted away from treating people in Africa and more towards containing the problem in places on the planet where AIDS is a problem, but has yet to truly start running away (such as in southeast Asia or South America.)

My reasons were stated. These people are morons. Half of them hate us when we try and help, the problem is too big to contain and our resources could be better used elsewhere. So let the ignorami die, let the terrorists die and fix the problem in places like russia, china etc while it still can be fixed there.

Newsflash people: Africa is fucked by HIV now. There is nothing we can do. We've tried education, that didn't work. We tried free aid and sending experts over to set up clinics, those failed too. We've even offered condoms and drugs, all failed.

It's now a matter of time and as HIV spreads like wildfire. Numbers of infected are going up in Africa AND the rest of the world. The only way to stop it is get people to learn some common sense because, guess what? There is no cure and there won't be ever if my studies have taught me anything.

Any comparison to the Black Death does injustice to the brilliance that is HIV. I'm doing a report on Plague right now and the numbers are insignificant.

It's sad to say that I have given up on Africa now, it's simply a lost cause.

In everything but transmitibility(sp?), I'd say HIV is kind of like influenza with a chainsaw, rapidly evolving, rapidly spreading, and almost always fatal.

To be perfectly honest, I won't. I'm not trying to be callous or anything, but I'm looking at it in a pragmatic fashion (Okay, maybe that's being callous anyways, so sue me). I don't know anyone from Africa, nor do I know anyone who is dying of AIDS. The only way I could empathize with the people over there is if I knew one or the other, or both. If a friend or relative dies of AIDS, then my views will probably change, but until then I will not be so dishonest as to claim that I feel a sympathy that I do not, in fact, feel.
