Taiwanese president shot?

Post by Darth Wong »

I just heard on the radio that the Taiwanese president was shot in the stomach on the eve of the election. It's not on any of the websites; has anyone else heard about this?

Just found it on Fox News, too.

 Wow, both the Prez and the Veep!

The magic bullet strikes again. Both look like they're going to pull through so I wish them luck and hope they catch the fucker soon who did the shooting.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. According to the news they're ok, Chen was hit on the abdomen and Lu had a scratched leg since she was sitting.

Who did it? So far I heard:

1. Some gangsters since KMT, PFP has a deep connection.

2. Since there are only 2 parties on this campaign the Blues wont be that stupid, thus it's a plot for pity, probably staged by former president Lee Teng Hui.

3. Some guy who just hates the Greens.

4. Commies?!

There's not much report now but I personally think it is likely 3.
2 is ridiculous for many reasons but since the beginning of this campaign everything, everyone has become ridiculous.
1 is unlikely because of the reasons of 2.

4....hmm....

The last presidential election China barked directly on the media warning Taiwan not to elect Chen, they failed. Perhaps...?! I have to say that if this IS the reason behind this shooting the Commies are fucking stupid. IMHO the election this time has always been in favor of the Blues since the KMT joined with the PFP.

Well, all you geopolitical studies majors, What are the implications of this attempted assassination? I know it depends greatly on who they find did it. But what are y'alls takes on it? Me: I think the world will say collectively: "Oh my Gosh, that's terrible! Where d'ya wanna go for lunch?" but, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Yeah you're wrong, lunch finished hours ago. But seriously, we have to wait for the responsible party to be found before we can figure out the impact. For example, if it was China....holy shit! But if it was some crazy idiot....then no real big deal.

What's the difference between fatal and lethal anyway? I always wonder.

Well, since Chen doesn't seem like the type to simply give up his open-air, grass roots style of campaigning, he had damn well better be wearing body armor the next time he makes public a public appearance...

Fatal: The shot kills him. (ex: shot to the head where you die immediately)
Lethal: The shot causes damage that will kill him. (ex: shot to the stomach where you blood to death for hours)

The PRC stands to lose far too much if it was caught doing such a thing to ever try it.

What would happen if it were conclusively determined that PRC was responsible for it? (Or, more insanely, they admitted to it?)

The US goes apeshit on their asses and public opinion of their country falls, a boycott of Chinese goods would hurt them pretty badly...

Quite possibly military action would be taken against them by just about every country with offensive military capability. Seriously, the world wouldn't stand for a country like China to do something such as this. That would be the closest thing to a WW3 scenario possible in this day and age.

BBC's article has a funny quote:
"The vice-president first felt pain in her knee and she thought it was caused by firecrackers," presidential secretary general Chiou I-jen told a news conference in Taipei.

"Then the president felt some wetness on his stomach area, and then they realised something was wrong."
"Well lookit that, I've been shot. Darn them, this is a new shirt, too!" :P

If by boycott, you mean a shutdown of the world economy, then yes. In these situations, its too bad everything is made in China these days

It would fuck China even worse than it would fuck the rest of the world. It's not like they can really hold a gun to our head over trade...

I doubt it. No one is going to go to war over this if it was the PRC..its not worth it. If it was the PRC there would be a severe cooling of diplomatic realations all round, much rhetoric and posturing.
Worst case, Taiwan declares independence and the PRC is severly embarresed as the world laughs at their millitary impotence to stop it.

Doubt it. Does the rest of the world really care enough about this to attack China?

Not a military attack- limited sanctions and diplomatic posturing is likely the worst that can happen. The States and Britain know they're in no position for another War with troops deplyoed in the Middle East and Afghanistan- they would have to pull out of there quickly and redeploy.
