Re: Journalists walk out on Powell in Baghdad
I can understand their fustration, but this whole walk out seems like a political stunt to me ... maybe they should run for office!
Does that sound too harsh?

This is a Political stunt....
They ran a checkpoint...... That is what happens.. You get shot
Al Arabiya said the two journalists were shot Thursday night by U.S. troops after another vehicle, traveling alongside their car, ran a U.S. checkpoint.

Can't you get anything right? It was another vehicle which ran it, not the journalists.theski wrote:This is a Political stunt....Al Arabiya said the two journalists were shot Thursday night by U.S. troops after another vehicle, traveling alongside their car, ran a U.S. checkpoint.

Think about it. The most likely scenario is the journalists stopped at the checkpoint as the other car traveling alongside them broke it. Or do you think the first car magically dragged them past the checkpoint too? Or maybe the journalists really did cross it too because they panicked. The point is, we don't know enough. To call the walkout a political stunt isn't very fair.

Um, they're pretty much all Arabs over there. The fact that US troops aren't shooting every car at a check point pretty much debunks your theory.
You know, this martyr shit has gone too far with journalist martyrsThe journalists who walked out of the news conference demanded a "full and open investigation into journalist martyrs."

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

If they were CNN journalists, the CNN news anchors would be calling them "heroes" instead.Knife wrote: You know, this martyr shit has gone too far with journalist martyrs

"The network identified the two as cameraman Ali Abdel-Aziz and correspondent Ali al-Khattab. Abdul Wahab Abdullah, al Arabiya's general manager in Saudi Arabia, said the journalists were driving in central Baghdad when another car ran a U.S. checkpoint."

True, and I at that too. Hero has long been an overused word. That said, I do feel sorry that the two were killed, something I neglected to write in my previous post.Darth Wong wrote:If they were CNN journalists, the CNN news anchors would be calling them "heroes" instead.Knife wrote: You know, this martyr shit has gone too far with journalist martyrs

Um, I was responding to this particular bit of thinking;BoredShirtless wrote:How many cars do you think are unlucky enough to watch the car in front speed through the checkpoint? Thought so.Knife wrote: Um, they're pretty much all Arabs over there. The fact that US troops aren't shooting every car at a check point pretty much debunks your theory.
Perhaps I am missunderstanding your position, but to me is read like you thought it was understandable that the US military shot the journalists because they were arabs in a car at the check point while another set of (persumably) arabs ran the checkpoint. As if it was some sort of racial or profiling thing.Exactly. But it's sort of understandable; the journalists were Arabs....the vehicle in front just ran the checkpoint...could be a suicide car bomb...it's unfair for everyone, no matter which POV you take. Hm, let's see.theski wrote:What does Traveling alongside mean to you???? Idiot.... Does the article say they stopped for the check point??
- Journalist car stops at checkpoint. They ask them for papers or whatever. They let them go.
- Another vehicle runs past the checkpoint. They reach a point where they're along side the Journalist car.
- The soldiers fire at the second vehicle, and hit the Journalist vehicle instead.
There you go. Nothing says that the Journalists themselves broke any rule.

Yes you seriously misunderstood me. I said it was sort of understandable when you consider the most important fact: the car in front just ran through the checkpoint. The fact the journalists were Arabs could have been the deal clincher if you know what I mean.Knife wrote:Perhaps I am missunderstanding your position, but to me is read like you thought it was understandable that the US military shot the journalists because they were arabs in a car at the check point while another set of (persumably) arabs ran the checkpoint.
