New concern about Russian nuclear powered vessels
Full Story
It seems that a Russian Admiral recently stated that the nuclear powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky could "blow up at any minute" (but later retracted the statement).
Saftey on the nuclear vessels of the underfunded Russian Navy has been a concern for years, but this is the most serious statement a Russian official has ever made about it...

even then the Russians can't afford to do shit about it. A damn shame to. The Kirov's are beautiful ships, and a damn fine design concept. The Kernel wrote:I'm sorry to say that it's going to take a full blown disaster before anyone gives enough of a shit to take action.

Blowing up... I hope he meant melt down? If not... I wonder, could Russian nuclear-powered craft perhaps have had some kind of last-ditch suicide device built in? I realize that it'd be nearly impossible to cause a reactor to blow up, but a Cherynobl-type meltdown after being captured, if in the midst of the enemy fleet, would seem to be a pretty nasty way of inflicting losses upon the other fleet. The irradiated ships would have to be either decontimated immediately or abandoned...It seems that a Russian Admiral recently stated that the nuclear powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky could "blow up at any minute" (but later retracted the statement).
I know, extremely wild idea, but considering the Russian mentality, I wouldn't be surprised... they're the people who massacred several million Ukranian military to castrate the country, ravaged Germany in their retaliation for Germany's invasion of Russia...
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.
He meant neither, the ship is going to be in port for two weeks. At this point it's PR to try to end someone's career.Elheru Aran wrote:Blowing up... I hope he meant melt down?

You can't blow up a reactor.I realize that it'd be nearly impossible to cause a reactor to blow up, but a Cherynobl-type meltdown after being captured, if in the midst of the enemy fleet, would seem to be a pretty nasty way of inflicting losses upon the other fleet.
You don't capture ships.
If you do, they aren't sitting in the middle of a fleet.
If you had a reactor meltdown, it would burn through the hull and sink into the ocean.
If you somehow had a Chernobyl sort of disaster on a ship in the middle of an enemy fleet, all modern ships are equipped to deal with fallout and such.
They can be, and no they wouldn't have to be.The irradiated ships would have to be either decontimated immediately or abandoned...
I would be surprised, because frankly it's the dumbest idea I've heard all day.I know, extremely wild idea, but considering the Russian mentality, I wouldn't be surprised... they're the people who massacred several million Ukranian military to castrate the country, ravaged Germany in their retaliation for Germany's invasion of Russia...

Not that has anything to do with anything, but regadless any sort of reactor fuckup makes a great eco-disastor
