Yahoo and Hotmail Users Beware!

Post by Dargos »

Your computer could be at risk of takeover by hackers.

I don't have to worry about this really. I never access free-mail from my home computer.

It only affects people foolish enough to read E-mail with Internet Exploder.

IE is tailor-made for security breaches. Even if you closed every conceivable flaw, it will always generate more problems simply because of its convenience features. For example, the "one click software installation" where a box pops up and asks if you want to install comet-cursor or flash or some other damned thing; how many people just click on "yes" every time something like that comes up? How does one ensure that the little caption on the box is actually telling the truth?

How would one go about reading hotmail with Mozilla?

I can't enable cookies like they recommend.

this is why you only open email from sources you recognize. it doesn't take much effort to check the sender and the title.

IIRC, no, this could only affect your e-mail account (which is bad enough), and Microsoft has fixed Hotmail some time ago to correct it. I'm not sure if Yahoo has yet.

Well I a) use Firefox, b) don't get junk mail nor read it on my Hotmail account and c) have more than one brain cell and so don't fall for scams or obvious virus or hacker emails.

I'm man enough to admit that some of Microsoft's products are useful. I'm also smart enough to admit that many of them also have exploitable holes.

I use a perl script (fetchyahoo) which parses Yahoo web pages and dumps it into an mbox file, which I read with Evolution, so meh.

And people actually wonder if there's a real argument for forcing Microsoft to NOT DISTRIBUTE Internet Explorer with Windows...

By this point there's so much stuff that references MSHTML.DLL that it'd be pointless to do. The best we can hope for is that Microsoft will clean it up, and we all know how likely that is to succeed.

Right. They'd be more likely to buy back Minix and start promoting it as the wave of the future.
